Georgian Bay Islands National Park and Beausoleil Island (Bimadinaagogi) National Historic Site are welcoming visitors back on May 15 for the summer season. Regular fees still apply for other experiences and services like mooring, beaching, boat shuttles, firewood, and bike rentals.

To make the most of your Parks Canada experience, be sure to plan your trip in advance.

On May 2, nearly 1,000 participants gathered at Tudhope Park for the 10th annual Charlee’s Run, presented by Lake Country Office Solutions. Together, they raised $130,357 in support of neonatal and paediatric care at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH), bringing the event’s total impact to more than $1 million for local patient care.

This milestone reflects the power of community support in enhancing care for babies, children, and families across the region. With more than 1,000 babies born annually at OSMH, and the hospital serving patients from across Simcoe County and Muskoka, funds raised through Charlee’s Run play a vital role in ensuring families have access to high-quality care close to home.

Over the past decade, contributions to Charlee’s Run has supported the purchase of critical equipment, including specialized warmers and resuscitation units to stabilize newborns immediately after birth, advanced patient monitoring systems, bedside bassinets that promote bonding and recovery, and paediatric syringe pumps that ensure precise, life-saving medication delivery.

“These investments are about more than equipment, they’re about people,” said Dr. Kim McIntosh, Chief of Staff at OSMH. “They help our teams deliver safe, high-quality, compassionate care, close to home. They support better outcomes for babies and children, and provide comfort and reassurance for families when they need it most.”

This year’s Charlee’s Run welcomed families, friends, and volunteers who braved the rain, snow, and eventual sunshine to make a difference at OSMH and to celebrate the little lives lost far too soon while celebrating a decade of impact.

“It’s been 10 years and over $1 million raised,” said Dave Holmes, event founder and Charlee’s father. “That’s because of our amazing Charlee’s Run village. Today and every day, we make sure these little ones are remembered and their families are not alone.”

Charlee’s Run was created in memory of Charlee Clare Holmes to support families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. Since its first event in 2017, it has grown into a village that provides compassionate community support.

“10 years ago, we started Charlee’s Run in hopes to ensure that no other family would ever feel alone in their loss,” said Mallory Holmes, event founder and Charlee’s mother. “We wanted others to know that it was okay to be broken, it was okay to say their names, share their stories, talk about milestones never seen, cry, laugh, and remember.”

As Charlee’s Run celebrates 10 years and a $1 million legacy, its impact continues to grow—helping ensure that OSMH remains a place where compassionate and community-driven care thrives, while building a stronger, healthier future for generations to come.

The OSMH Foundation is grateful to all the event sponsors and fundraisers for supporting the community and the hospital year after year. Honourable mentions go to this year’s top fundraisers the Jensen’s Joggers team, collecting over $8,000, and the top individual fundraiser, four-year-old Evelyne French who raised more than $5,200, proving that every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful impact.

Donations are still being accepted until midnight on May 15th. For more information, visit CharleesRun.com or call the OSMH Foundation at 705.325.6464.

Speeding, alcohol/drug impairment, driver inattention and lack of occupant restraint were linked to a significant number of last year’s 344 fatalities on Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-patrolled roads.

While the number of OPP-investigated road deaths varies from year to year, these leading causes and contributing factors do not. Every year, the death toll comes down to the same threat posed by the motoring public: how drivers and passengers choose to travel on our roadways.

As we head into the Victoria Day long weekend – one of the busiest weekends on our roads – as a driver, please remember that every person travelling with or near you stands to pay the price when you choose to take risks behind the wheel. So do their families. If you are a passenger, don’t let your family pay the price because you chose not to buckle up.

During the annual Canada Road Safety Week campaign, the OPP, alongside Canadian policing partners, will conduct robust targeted enforcement and education to address these pervasive road behaviours and any other risks they observe drivers taking. As we head into the warmer months, motorists are also reminded to watch out for increased pedestrian and cyclist traffic.

The OPP remains committed to saving lives on more than 130,000 kilometers of roadway throughout the province. Drivers are reminded of their vital role in keeping roads safe and that some of the most consequential decisions of their lives are made behind the wheel.

Please help make it a safe and enjoyable Victoria Day long weekend!

· Canada Road Safety Week is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and runs from May 12 to 18, 2026.

· Canada Road Safety Week forms part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2035 and Beyond, which aims to make Canada’s roads the safety in the world.

The Township continues to assess an issue at the Lake of Bays Community Centre, Arena and Library in Baysville, which has resulted in a temporary closure.

Based on ongoing monitoring and assessment, impacts remain limited to a specific area of the site, including part of the parking lot and an adjacent maintenance room.

Out of an abundance of caution, the facility was closed and remains closed while this work continues. The maintenance room remains restricted, and a formal order is in place for that area. No additional restrictions have been issued for other areas of the facility.

Township staff are now exploring how the rest of the facility may be safely reopened. This work is ongoing, as key building systems needed to operate the facility are located in that maintenance room.

The public water refill taps at the arena are currently not available. Staff are exploring alternative options. In the meantime, water taps remain available at the following locations in Lake of Bays:

Station 3 Hillside (1007 Limberlost Rd)

The events will be hosted at The Lake Joseph Golf Club in Port Carling on May 25 and Muskoka Bay Resort in Gravenhurst on July 27. Registration for each qualifier closes 10 days in advance of the event, and there is a maximum number of teams per event.

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is proud to recognize Nursing Week, taking place May 11–17, 2026, and to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of nurses across our hospitals and communities.

This year’s theme, “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health,” highlights the vital role nurses play in shaping patient experiences, strengthening healthcare teams, and driving meaningful change across the system.

“At MAHC, we see every day how nurses transform care through their compassion, expertise, and commitment,” says Andrea Lucas, Director of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive. “Whether at the bedside, supporting care behind the scenes, or leading teams, our nurses make a profound difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”

Nurses are at the heart of patient care—providing not only clinical excellence, but also comfort, advocacy, and connection during some of life’s most important and vulnerable moments. Their impact is often best reflected through the voices of patients and families.

“Having spent over 40 years working in healthcare, my wife and I understand how complex a hospital journey can be,” said Dr. Normand Laperriere, a patient who recently underwent an emergency appendectomy at Huntsville Hospital. “From the moment we arrived, every nurse we encountered was professional, skilled, and incredibly kind. The care was timely, coordinated, and compassionate—I am truly grateful for the outstanding care I received.”

Throughout Nursing Week, MAHC is hosting a number of activities to recognize and thank nursing staff across both hospital sites. Celebrations include appreciation lunches provided by Huntsville and South Muskoka Hospital Foundations, a thank you dinner, pancake breakfasts, and treat delivery carts.

President and CEO Cheryl Harrison recognizes the dedication and impact of nurses across the organization.

“As someone who began my career in nursing, I understand the profound responsibility and privilege that comes with this role,” says Harrison. “Our nurses are leaders, advocates, and caregivers who show up every day with skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do.”

Nursing Week is an opportunity to reflect on the essential role nurses play in delivering high-quality, patient- and family-centred care, and to express appreciation for their ongoing contributions to the health and well-being of our communities.

MAHC extends its sincere thanks to all nurses for their commitment, professionalism, and the meaningful difference they make every day.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police lay racing charges during a traffic stop on Highway 400.

On Thursday, May 7th, 2026, at approximately 12:15 p.m., members of the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducting traffic enforcement observed two vehicles travelling southbound on Highway 400 at high rates of speed while overtaking surrounding traffic in a coordinated manner. The two vehicles were observed travelling at 172 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone. Officers subsequently conducted traffic stops on both vehicles.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old from Sudbury was charged with:

Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – race a motor vehicle

Fail to surrender insurance card

A 28-year-old from Lynden was also charged with:

Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – Race a Motor Vehicle

Both drivers were issued 30-day driver’s licence suspensions, and both vehicles were impounded for 14 days. All accused were issued Provincial Offence Summons and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on July 21, 2026.

The OPP reminds motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading contributing factors in serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions and significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions.

The District has heard from lake associations and community groups that a lack of funding and resources can make it hard to move good projects forward.
