A family-owned and operated waterfront restaurant located at the Midland Town Dock, The Boathouse Eatery overlooks the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay and has long been a gathering place for locals, visitors, families, and staff alike. Known for its welcoming, community-focused atmosphere, the restaurant offers casual dining, fresh and flavourful food, live music, and stunning views of the Bay, making it a year-round fixture in the Midland and Georgian Bay community.

“At the heart of a strong community is access to excellent health care,” say owners Kirk McNabb and Taylor Kendall. “GBGH plays a vital role in caring for our families, friends, staff, and neighbours when it matters most. As a family-owned business, we see how deeply connected our community is and how important it is to support the places that care for us when we need it most. Becoming a strategic partner with the GBGH Foundation is our way of giving back to a place that gives so much.”

As a Business Cares Strategic Partner, The Boathouse Eatery joins the We See You campaign, a $35-million initiative to strengthen care at GBGH through investments in vital equipment, technology, and acute mental health services. The campaign is rooted in the belief that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for — inside and out.

“The Boathouse Eatery has been supporting GBGH for many years through in-kind contributions and generous donations, and we’re grateful to see that commitment grow in such a meaningful way,” says Robyn Blanchet, key relationships officer, GBGH Foundation. “Kirk and Taylor genuinely care for people — not just around the table, but across the community. This partnership strengthens our hospital’s ability to care for patients and families today and into the future.”

Through Business Cares, The Boathouse Eatery joins a growing network of local businesses who recognize the vital role of health care and choose to invest in its future — helping to build a stronger hospital and a healthier community for everyone who depends on GBGH.

Buying a vehicle at Cavalcade Ford this August or September will also
help equip the South Muskoka Hospital healthcare teams with the tools and technology
they need to care for patients across the community.

During the dealership’s employee pricing event, Cavalcade Ford will donate $500 to South
Muskoka Hospital Foundation for every new or used vehicle sold in the months of August
& September.

“Cavalcade Ford is proud to support the hospital that our employees, customers and
neighbours count on,” said Will Miller, Owner of Cavalcade Ford. “This event gives our
customers an opportunity to find the right vehicle at employee pricing while helping
strengthen healthcare in our community. Every vehicle sold will generate a $500 donation,
and we hope this campaign encourages other local businesses to find their own way to
support the hospital.”

“Community partnerships like this make a real and immediate difference for local
healthcare,” said Kathryn Devlin, Director of Philanthropy, South Muskoka Hospital
Foundation. “The Miller family has been supporting our hospital for 40 years and funds
raised through this new campaign will help ensure our hospital continues to be able to
provide exceptional care here in South Muskoka.”

Community members are invited to visit Cavalcade Ford during August and September to
explore its selection of new and used vehicles and take part in the employee-pricing event.
For details, visit Cavalcade Ford at 420 Ecclestone Drive, Bracebridge, or call 705-645

New stamps highlight the ecological importance of wolves in Canada

Stamps feature striking, close-up images of wolves found in different parts of the Canadian wilderness

Canada Post has issued new stamps highlighting the role wolves play as a keystone species.

Wolves contribute significantly to the health and biodiversity of the ecosystem. Intelligent hunters often associated with the North and remote Canadian landscapes, the animals also figure prominently in many Indigenous cultures.

A social animal, wolves use co-operative hunting and share responsibility for raising their young – a behaviour seen in only a small percentage of mammals. With sharp senses that help them detect prey up to 1.6 kilometres away, wolves hunt small and large animals, including caribou, deer, elk, moose, bison and even muskoxen.

Wolves featured in different regions of the country

The stamps feature the grey wolf, eastern wolf, Arctic grey wolf and coastal grey wolf. The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is the largest and most widespread wolf in Canada, found everywhere except the Maritimes.

Only slightly bigger than an eastern coyote, the eastern wolf (Canis sp. cf. lycaon) is a federally listed species at risk that lives mainly in central Ontario and southwestern Quebec. It has an estimated population of 200 to 1,000 mature wolves and can be found in Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park and southwestern Quebec.

The Arctic grey wolf (Canis lupus arctos) is a nomadic hunter well adapted to the northern climate, while the coastal grey wolf (Canis lupus crassodon) is a strong swimmer that lives along Canada’s Pacific coast and near-shore islands.

About the stamps

Each stamp features a close-up view of wolves in Canadian landscapes. The booklet cover and interior features additional photographs of coastal grey wolves on Vancouver Island. The stamps are designed by Andrew Perro, featuring photography by Michelle Valberg (Canis lupus crassodon), John E. Marriott Photography (Canis lupus), Ejaz Khan Photography (Canis lupus arctos), Michael Runtz and Steve Dunsford (Canis sp. Cf. lycaon). This stamp issue is printed by Lowe-Martin and includes a booklet of eight Permanent™ domestic rate stamps, an Official First Day Cover, a Souvenir Sheet and four Postage-Paid Postcards. The cancel location is Whitney, Ontario, near the East Gate of Algonquin Provincial Park.

The stamps and collectibles will be available at canadapost.ca and at select postal outlets across Canada beginning on August 13.

Jonpaul Evans of Utterson was convicted of unlawfully occupying and depositing items on public lands in violation of a notice. He was fined $3,500.

The Ontario Court of Justice heard that on November 4, 2024, conservation officers located a camping trailer, pickup truck and flat bed trailer parked in the McConnell Lakes Management area of Lasalle Township, where camping is prohibited. On the same date, a second pickup truck was located with a shipping container and mini excavator in McAuslan Township.

An investigation revealed that the items had been deposited in October 2024. Evans left the trucks, camping trailer and shipping container on site throughout the winter. All items except the shipping container were removed by Evans during the summer of 2025. Evans had previously been convicted in 2018 for leaving a camping trailer on public land for an extended period.

Justice of the Peace Monique Mechefske heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on January 22, 2026.

Muskoka’s Most Distinctive New Dining and Nightlife Destination Elevates the
Region with Rooftop Tapas, Infinity Pools and Panoramic Views

Muskoka Bay Resort is thrilled to unveil Muskoka Skybar, a rooftop destination that pairs elevated cuisine, handcrafted cocktails and an infinity pool with sweeping views of its championship golf course and the surrounding Canadian Shield landscape. The destination is now open to the public.

Perched atop the resort’s newest condo-style hotel, Muskoka Skybar offers one of the
most breathtaking vantage points in Ontario. Sweeping views extend across the
resort’s championship golf course, consistently ranked among Canada’s Top 10, and
the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield. On clear days, guests can see all the way
to Blue Mountain, more than 150 kilometres away. Framed by contemporary lounge
spaces, infinity pools and chef-crafted tapas, Muskoka Skybar offers an experience
unlike anything else in the region.

“We knew we weren’t just opening another restaurant—we had the opportunity to
create a destination people would travel for,” said James May, Senior Director of Food
& Beverage at Muskoka Bay Resort. “If you’re spending a Saturday afternoon by the
infinity pool with a live DJ, or making it part of a weekend getaway, we want every
visit to feel like you’ve discovered something completely unexpected in Muskoka.

There simply isn’t another experience like it in the region.”
Beyond dining and cocktails, Muskoka Skybar is designed as a dynamic social and
lifestyle destination, with live DJs and entertainment every Friday through Sunday.
Resort guests can also take advantage of morning wellness programming, bringing
a different energy to the rooftop from day to night. The space is also available for
private events, offering a distinctive setting for celebrations, corporate gatherings
and other special occasions.

The culinary program features a menu of refined share plates inspired by global
flavours, including dishes such as cumin lamb lollipops, crab tostada and other
chef-crafted tapas. The food experience is complemented by handcrafted cocktails,
premium wines, bottle service and a curated selection of craft beverages.

Muskoka Skybar marks the latest chapter in Muskoka Bay Resort’s continued
evolution as one of Ontario’s premier four-season destinations. Earlier this summer,
the resort expanded its accommodations with the opening of its newest luxury
condo hotel, introducing modern suites designed for golf getaways, couples’ escapes
and elevated family vacations. Together with the resort’s championship golf course,
contemporary accommodations, elevated dining experiences and year-round
programming, Muskoka Skybar further establishes Muskoka Bay Resort as one of the
province’s most distinctive resort destinations.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is reminding residents and visitors to watch for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms in lakes and rivers and to avoid contact with water where blooms are present.

Blue-green algae occur naturally in Ontario lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Blooms are most common during the summer and early fall, when water is warm and calm. While not all blue-green algae blooms are harmful, some produce toxins that can cause illness in people, pets and wildlife.

Exposure to toxins produced by blue-green algae can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, as well as stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, muscle weakness, fever and dizziness. In severe cases, swallowing affected water can damage the liver or kidneys. Anyone who develops symptoms after exposure should contact a health-care provider.

Pets can become seriously ill if they drink affected water or ingest blue-green algae while grooming after swimming. Contact a veterinarian if your pet may have been exposed to a bloom and shows unusual behaviour or signs of illness.

A blue-green algae bloom can cause water to:

Appear blue-green, bright green or turquoise.

Look like pea soup or as though paint has been spilled on the surface.

Develop floating scum, streaks or thick mats.

Produce a musty, garbage-like or rotten-egg odour.

Residents and cottagers are reminded to never use untreated water from a lake or river for drinking, cooking or preparing infant formula. Boiling water does not destroy blue-green algae toxins and may increase their concentration when water evaporates. Private water supplies and residential water treatment systems may not effectively remove these toxins.

If water appears to contain a bloom, assume toxins are present and avoid contact. Take the following steps to stay safe:

Do not swim, wade or participate in water sports where a bloom is visible.

Do not allow pets or livestock to swim in or drink affected water.

Be cautious about eating fish caught from water where a bloom is present, particularly the organs, where toxins may accumulate.

Do not apply herbicides, copper sulphate or other algaecides, as these can cause algae cells to break open and release additional toxins into the water.

Areas of the same lake or river that are well away from a visible bloom are generally considered safe for recreational use. However, avoid water where a bloom is present or where algae have accumulated along the shoreline.

If you suspect a blue-green algae bloom, avoid the area and report it to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks through the Spills Action Centre. Public health, municipalities and environmental agencies work together to investigate confirmed blooms and inform the public.

When using local waterways this summer, watch for signs of blue-green algae and avoid water where a bloom is visible. Sharing this information with family and friends can help protect people, pets and the community.

For more information about blue-green algae, visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s webpage.
