Bracebridge, ON — From August 22 to September 6, 2025, customers who bring a donation to the M&M Food Market in Bracebridge will receive a free loaf of garlic bread as part of the store’s ongoing food bank program.

“We’ve had great success in the past with our program,” said store manager Sean Toldy. “We’ve been collecting donations on and off for almost two years now, and every few months we do giveaways for our customers. This month, it’s free garlic bread.”

When the campaign ends, the donations will be converted into frozen meals, which are then collected and stored at Salvation Army South Muskoka Ministries (456 Manitoba Street, Bracebridge) for local families in need. The food bank is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We’ve worked with Robin, who manages the Food Bank and Family Services, and we applaud her and her whole team for all the work they’ve done for the community,” Sean added. “We’ve been told that many families are struggling and those housed in motels are in desperate need for microwaveable meals.”

Alongside the program, the store is highlighting its 2 lb lasagna, where the regular price is now frozen at $9.99. A classic combination to go along with your garlic bread.

For those who might not know, M&M Food Market offers a variety of frozen meals, meats, seafood, appetizers, and desserts, all made without artificial flavours or colours, with gluten-free and vegetarian options available as well.

“It’s more than just a business,” Sean said. “It’s about making sure every family has something to put on the table, and supporting our community.”

The Bracebridge location, at 295 Wellington Street North, Unit 11, is known for its welcoming customer service and have proudly been operating as a family business for five years. The Toldy family — David, Donna, and Sean — have also been in Muskoka for over 30 years.

“We are blessed to have this community,” Sean said. “We appreciate all our wonderful customers, many of whom have become our close friends over the years. We can’t thank you all enough for your support.”

Don’t miss out on your chance to donate to your local food bank and go home with a great meal of your own.

On August 21, 2025, the Municipality of McDougall has taken a significant step to improve the living conditions at Belvedere Heights, by securing a $2,568,123.50 loan through Ontario Infrastructure and Lands Corporation for Belvedere Heights Board of Management. In an act of community support and foresight, this substantial financial support will enable the addition of 22 new beds, addressing the increasing demand for senior care and ensuring that more residents can enjoy a comfortable and supportive environment.

The loan serves as a vital bridge, allowing construction and expansion efforts to begin immediately, ahead of the province’s Construction Funding Subsidy top-up. “Without this leading support by McDougall, these badly needed additional long term care beds would not be possible for the seniors in our community” said McDougall Mayor, Dale Robinson.

After McDougall’s loan is fully utilized, Seguin Township and Carling Township will also step up to lend funds to bridge financing. This proactive initiative not only highlights a strong commitment to the wellbeing of senior citizens but also emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts within West Parry Sound.

Muskoka 100 People Who Care is seeking nominations for the three presenting charities at their upcoming meeting.

The nomination window is open until Aug. 1. Twice a year, the group gives local charities a chance to win fundraising. Muskoka 100 People Who Care was built on the idea of 100+ people coming together to impact a charity through donations and promoting local awareness. Their next meeting is happening on Aug. 25 at the Windermere Golf and Country Club. The event will include a social hour and dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. Organizers ask attendees to support the venue before the meeting and bring $100 for their donation.

“We encourage contributors to nominate a charity they are familiar with or have heard of, as well as charities that may be overlooked within our community,” said Aly Brown, one of the four organizers behind the group. “Our only request is that the charity can deliver a tax receipt to the donor for their donation amount.”

All are welcome, and participants will receive a voting ballot once the envelope with their details and donation is returned to the registration desk. Three charities will present about the work they are doing in the community. After the presentation is complete, the group will vote, and the chosen charity will be announced.

“There are so many needs in our local community, and I fear most of us just do not understand them fully,” Brown said. “So to come together, enjoy an evening with friends and/or family and learn through being educated by these charity organizers is our goal!”

Please follow this link to nominate and register for the event, or email muskoka100pwc@gmail.com.

Huntsville’s Tyler Gevaert, a 16-year-old slalom kayaker, has been awarded funding and an accelerated path to the Olympics after impressing scouts at the RBC Training Ground national final.

Gevaert was one of more than 2,500 athletes (aged 14-25) to participate in RBC Training Ground this year, an annual cross-country talent search run in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee and regional Canadian Sport Institutes. Only 100 athletes were invited to the final, held in Halifax on Nov. 2. Only 30 of the finalists were selected for funding.

RBC Training Ground sees athletes from a wide range of sports perform core speed, strength, power and endurance tests in front of Olympic talent scouts from thirteen different Olympic sports to find the sport for which they are most suited.

An athlete’s anthropomorphic measurements (height, wingspan, etc), sport-specific testing (conducted following the qualifier stage) and competitive sport history also play a role in who is selected for funding.

The complete list of 30 athletes selected for funding is available at RBCTrainingGround.ca

“Some of the athletes who participate in RBC Training Ground are looking to reenergize or boost an Olympic dream in a sport they are already participating in,” said Evan MacInnis, Technical Director, RBC Training Ground. “Others participate with the hope of being discovered and directed toward an Olympic sport they may have never considered.

The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC), home of Ontario’s Turtle Hospital, is thrilled to announce the return of its popular online 50/50 raffle.

This exciting fundraiser, licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and subject to their regulations, is a great way to support the cause and win big. The 50/50 Raffle launched on Friday, Oct. 25. Ticket sales end on Monday, Nov. 25, and the draw date is Tuesday, Nov. 26. The pot is already over $38,000, meaning the winner takes home $19,000, and there is still time for the pot to grow.

The OTCC is a registered charity that protects and conserves Ontario’s native turtles and their habitat. It accomplishes this by operating a turtle hospital that treats, rehabilitates, and releases injured turtles, conducting extensive research to further conservation initiatives, and running a comprehensive education and outreach program.

Helping Raise Funds

Participating in the OTCC’s 50/50 Raffle is simple. For every ticket you purchase, half the amount goes into the prize pot, and the other half goes towards treating and caring for injured turtles admitted to the OTCC. The last 50/50 raffle winner took home $14,310, which means the same amount went to helping the turtles—thanks to everyone who purchased tickets.

In a 50/50 raffle, the prize money is half the total ticket sales, so the more tickets sold, the bigger the prize. Your participation gives you a chance to win big and directly contribute to the conservation of Ontario’s turtles.

Wildlife Rescues

Fundraising for wildlife rescues is essential because it directly supports the care, rehabilitation and conservation of animals affected by vehicle strikes, habitat loss, pollution, climate change and mishaps due to human activities and infrastructure. Wildlife rescues often receive limited or no government funding because they fall outside government budget priorities, frequently focused on healthcare, infrastructure and human services. While governments allocate some funding for conservation programs, it’s usually directed toward large-scale, high-profile environmental initiatives or specific endangered species programs rather than smaller, local wildlife rescues.

Most wildlife rescues operate as non-profits to remain operational, relying heavily on donations, grants and fundraising to cover expenses. Securing government grants can be challenging, as it frequently involves strict compliance criteria, lengthy application processes, and competition with other environmental organizations that equally need the funds. This funding gap is why community support and fundraising are so crucial— and why wildlife rescues, for example, the OTCC, rely on donations for medical treatments, food, specialized equipment and staffing, allowing them to continue their essential work in caring for injured turtles native to Ontario so they can be released back into the wild to fulfill their unique and valuable role in the ecosystem providing services we all depend and benefit from.

With a record 2,300 turtles admitted to the turtle hospital this year, your support is more urgent than ever. Every dollar you contribute will make a significant difference! The hope is that the raffle pot will surpass the last raffle, and this will directly translate into more resources for the OTCC to continue its vital work in caring for injured turtles and promoting their conservation.

50/50 Raffle Conditions

Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre is the legal operating name of Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, Registered Charitable Business #857524409 RR0001.

AGCO License RAF1425891 | Must be 18+ and a resident of Ontario
Prize: 50% of Ticket Sales
Ticket Prices: 40 for $100; 12 for $50; 3 for $20; 1 for $10
Sales End: November 25, 2024, | Draw Date November 26, 2024, 11:00 AM EST at 2785 Television Road, Peterborough, Ontario K9L 1E9.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter and multiple JUNO Award nominee Shawnee Kish is visiting Midhurst, MacTier and Parry Sound on Nov. 30 as she tours Canada and the U.S. with the CP Holiday Train.

Kish returned on Oct. 24 with the release of “Brother”, an emotional ballad exploring the raw emotions that come with making the difficult decision to step away from someone who isn’t good for you, no matter the love that remains. Through Kish’s quintessential heartfelt lyricism, “Brother” beautifully captures the struggle and complexity of such moments, offering a gentle reminder that prioritizing mental and emotional health is a vital act of self-love, even if it means navigating the bittersweet nature of wishing the best for those we know we must also leave behind.

“With ‘Brother,’ I wanted to create a space for reflection and understanding in the midst of heartache. This song is a tribute to the complex emotions we face when we have to let someone go, and the strength it takes to prioritize our own well-being,” shares Kish. “I hope listeners find solace in the words of goodbye, knowing that love is messy and complicated and you can still wish someone well on their journey apart from you because that’s what love really means to me.”

Kish has had a transformative year, embracing her new role as a first-time mom, being named one of TikTok’s 2024 Indigenous Visionary Voices, and channeling these experiences into her music. She has been busy writing and recording new material, developing a body of work that reflects her most raw and vulnerable creations yet.

Earlier this year, Kish released the poignant tribute “Dear Dad,” followed by “Reclaim,” a powerful narrative of transformation where she turns pain into pride and reclaims her story with resolute courage. Now, with “I’m Alive” marking a defining moment in her evolution, and today’s release of “Brother”, she continues to push creative boundaries while fighting for representation and respect.

Kish will join the CP Holiday Train as it makes stops across Canada and the U.S. from Nov. 27 to Dec. 8, bringing her powerful performances to audiences far and wide.

Americana, alt-country trio The Redhill Valleys are coming to Bracebridge next month, hot off the release of their new single “Ready To Roll” on Oct. 25.

With powerful, earthy harmonies, rootsy guitar licks and timeless lyrics, The Redhill Valleys emerged with a force onto the Canadian music scene in 2016. The three-piece Americana alt-country group, whose name pays homage to their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, is composed of band members Chelsea McWilliams (Bass/Vocals), Tim Allard (Lead Guitar/Vocals), and Matt Soliveri (Drums). The band doesn’t shy away from nostalgia and pulls influence from artists such as Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Neil Young, The Band and Fleetwood Mac.

The group’s new single is available now via MDM Recordings Inc./ADA Canada. The moody track, featuring lyrics like “You wanna go all in? You better raise the stakes. You wanna go for a ride? Get your foot off the brakes,” explores the intensity and uncertainty of a blossoming relationship, capturing the need for commitment and the willingness to take risks to see how far it can go.

To celebrate the release, The Redhill Valleys are gearing up for an exciting run of shows across Ontario, joining The Washboard Union on their Grab The Wheel and Go Tour and bringing their dynamic sound to stages throughout the province. The band will be part of the Country-fied Muskoka lineup at the Speakeasy at Muskoka Foundry on Nov. 23.

“’Ready to Roll’ is a swampy anthem for anyone stepping into the early stages of a new relationship,” said The Redhill Valleys. “It speaks to recognizing your own worth and sending a clear message: if they want to be with you, they’d better be prepared to give it their all and keep up.”

“Ready to Roll” follows the release of “Make It Out Alive,” a high-octane anthem bursting with energy, driven by powerful guitar riffs and captivating vocals. The Redhill Valleys continue to hone their craft with songs like “Rhinestoned,” a sparkling, genre-blending nod to the dazzling ’70s country era, and “Making Rumours” which delves into the intricate web of secret relationships, showcasing their knack for creating evocative, thought-provoking music.

After releasing their two-part EP, Travel Well, in 2022 The Redhill Valleys’ single “Anymore” garnered significant praise including winning first place in the American Songwriter Magazine lyric contest, and receiving regular airplay on SiriusXM’s North Americana, CBC Country, and Tom Petty Radio.

Nominated for several awards, including “Best Group” and “Best Roots Artists” at the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards for three years in a row, the band has built a steady fanbase, extensively touring across Canada, with appearances on prominent stages including Boots and Hearts Music Festival, Big Sky Music Festival, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, along with visits to the US and the UK, including three shows as part of C2C: Country to Country 2024, Europe’s biggest country music festival.
