Witnesses Sought By SIU Of OPP-Involved Collision With School Bus In Orillia

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is seeking witnesses to a collision involving a school bus and truck on Highway 11 in Orillia last Thursday morning. A 16-year-old girl on board the school suffered a serious, non-life-threatening injury. The SIU is investigating the circumstances that led to the collision.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

On April 16, 2026, just before 7:30 a.m., an officer driving an OPP vehicle with emergency lights was stopped on the off-ramp to Forestview Road and partially onto Highway 11 northbound.
At the same time, travelling northbound on Highway 11, there was a collision involving a school bus and a truck.
Dashcam video shows a dark-coloured Jeep Wrangler SUV travelling northbound as well as vehicular traffic travelling southbound at the time of the collision. SIU Called In After Collision On Hwy. 11 Thursday Morning

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following a multi-vehicle collision in Orillia.

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at approximately 7:30 a.m., an unmarked Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicle with its emergency lights activated was merging onto Highway 11 northbound from Forestview Road when a collision occurred involving a dump truck and a school bus. The driver of the dump truck and three youths from the school bus were transported to a local hospital.

The Highway 11 northbound Forestview Road off-ramp was temporarily closed for investigation and has since reopened.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide further information.

SIU Called In After Disturbance In Penetanguishene

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following a disturbance in Penetanguishene.

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, shortly before 9:00 p.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at a residence on Main Street. As a result of the investigation, an individual was located and taken into custody at a residence on Wolfe Street. During the arrest, the individual sustained an injury.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide further information.

SIU Clears OPP Officer After Man’s Broken Elbow Injury In Bracebridge Hospital Arrest

The Deputy Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Stacey O’Brien, found no reasonable grounds to believe an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the left elbow suffered by a 60-year-old man in Bracebridge. On November 24, 2025, the man was discharged from the hospital and refused to leave so he was escorted out by security. He refused to leave the property. Police were called and arrested the man for trespassing.

The officer took the man’s left arm to turn him around while he walked back toward the hospital doors. While Deputy Director O’Brien accepted that the man’s injury was incurred in physical interaction with the officer, she did not accept that the injury was attributable to any unlawful conduct on the part of the officer.

SIU Concludes Investigation Into Man Shot By Less-Lethal Firearm In Midland

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with firing an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) at a 28-year-old man. On September 29, 2025, police were called to a carpark behind the Guesthouse Shelter, 522 Elizabeth Street, Midland. There were 911 calls about a man armed with a knife chasing a female in the vicinity.

The man fled from police and threw his knife away. He had a knife but threw it away. The man refused to stop despite repeated commands. The officer discharged three rounds of the ARWEN at the man. The man fell and the officer arrested him.

Director Martino found the use of the less-lethal firearm made sense as the man had reportedly had a knife, and its use allowed the officer to neutralize the man from a safe distance without anyone getting seriously hurt.

SIU Concludes Investigation Into Man’s Self-Inflicted Death In Minden Hills

In the late afternoon of April 13, 2025, OPP officers were dispatched to a property in Minden Hills after a woman reported that her husband was suicidal and in possession of a firearm. When police arrived on scene, the man had travelled about 80 metres or so east of the house and was among some trees. Officers took up positions of cover beside a shed east of the residence. An officer directed the man to drop his weapon, to which the man responded with profanity. He refused to drop the rifle and told the officers to shoot him. An officer continued to negotiate with the man. When the man raised his rifle in the officers’ direction, an officer fired his C8 rifle twice, striking the man’s left buttock and upper left leg. Moments later, the 60-year-old man shot himself. The officers made their way to the man’s body and observed that he was deceased. He had suffered a catastrophic injury to the head. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s death.

SIU Concludes Investigation Into OPP Officer’s Less-Lethal Discharge At Man In Gravenhurst

The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe a Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the discharge of a less-lethal firearm at a 60-year-old man in Gravenhurst. He was not seriously injured. On April 4, 2025, OPP officers were dispatched to a residential area following calls to police from several homeowners reporting the man set fire to a number of residences.

The officer, having reason to believe the man had a knife, shot the man with an Anti-riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) in the course of his arrest.

Director Joseph Martino found the use of the ARWEN made sense when the man refused to peacefully surrender and began to close the distance with the officers.

SIU Concludes Investigation Into Interaction With Man Inside West Parry Sound Hospital Safe Room

In the evening of November 4, 2023, a 44-year-old man was arrested and then taken to the West Parry Sound Health Centre hospital as he appeared to be of unsound mind. The man was placed in a ‘safe room’ to await medical evaluation. When the man’s mental state began to deteriorate, the hospital contacted the police. Officers attempted to calm the man through the door, but he was unreceptive. After some time, the officers pried the door open. One officer was able to deploy his conducted energy weapon through the small opening that had been created. The officers were then able to enter the room and physically engage the man. He was handcuffed and then sedated by hospital staff. The man was subsequently diagnosed with a fracture of the left orbital bone. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injury.

SIU Concludes Investigation Into Man’s Fractured Knee in Orillia Arrest

The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the fractured right knee suffered by a 60-year-old man. On December 31, 2024, officers were called to a residence in the area of Colborne Street and West Street South in Orillia for a report that the man threatened a woman with a knife.

Officers encountered the man and forced him to the floor. There was a struggle before the officers handcuffed the man. The man was taken to the detachment, then the hospital where he was diagnosed with the serious injury.

While Director Joseph Martino accepted that the man’s injury was incurred in the altercation that marked his arrest, there was no basis for proceeding with criminal charges.

SIU Investigating Death Of Man In Minden Hills

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 60-year-old man yesterday in Minden Hills.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 13, 2025, an individual called police to report that they were concerned for the well-being of a man. Police were told that the man had left his property with a firearm.
Soon after OPP officers arrived on scene, in the area of Highway 1 and Highway 17, there was an exchange of gunfire between an officer and the man, who was in some bushes.
The man was located deceased. His fatal injury was determined to be self-inflicted.

Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
