The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has reasonable grounds to believe an Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment committed criminal offences between August of 2024 and October of 2025.

On February 6, 2026, the Ontario Provincial Police notified the SIU of an allegation of sexual assault involving an officer and a woman. In the course of its investigation, the SIU uncovered separate allegations involving two additional women.

As a result of the SIU investigations, Cst Zahid Javed is facing the following charges under the Criminal Code:

Three counts of sexual assault and

Three counts of breach of trust

Cst Javed was arrested at SIU headquarters this morning and later released on several conditions, including that he refrains from communicating directly or indirectly with the affected persons.

Cst Javed is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 605 Yonge Street in Midland on September 10, 2026.

As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation.

Muskoka Recovery formerly operated an addiction rehabilitation business from a property owned by 2855531 Ontario in Muskoka. The holding company owns four properties in the region, while Canonaco and Ewa Maria Ricci each hold 50% of both companies. Canonaco invested as a silent partner and pledged personally owned real estate to support financing for the business, while Ricci and Canonaco’s husband, Ralph Canonaco, managed its operations. According to the application, 285 acquired its principal operating property at 1035 Breezy Point Road for $2.6 million in August 2021, followed by two additional properties that year and a fourth property in Gravenhurst for $760,000 in June 2023.

The companies later obtained a $5.5 million credit facility from BMO in August 2024, with 285 as borrower and Canonaco, Muskoka Recovery and Ricci as guarantors. After the Toronto Star published a two-part investigation concerning Muskoka Recovery in December 2024, BMO amended the facility to require quarterly reporting and compliance with specified performance metrics. The Court said Muskoka Recovery subsequently failed to satisfy those metrics and stopped operating in late 2025. BMO called the facility on April 30, 2026, making formal demand and serving a notice of intention to enforce security.

Financial pressure was accompanied by what the Court found was a complete failure of corporate governance. Canonaco alleged that she had been denied financial information, excluded from major decisions and removed as a Muskoka Recovery director without proper notice or authority. She also raised concerns about related-party transactions and unexplained expenditures, including approximately $150,000 spent allegedly renovating part of a property owned by Ricci’s nephew. The Court found a strong prima facie case both of shareholder deadlock and of oppressive or unfairly prejudicial conduct, noting that the two equal owners were no longer capable of jointly managing property, investigating financial issues or retaining counsel for the companies.

The companies were also carrying property tax arrears and facing about nine lawsuits arising from Muskoka Recovery’s former operations. Those proceedings include a proposed class action commenced in March 2025 seeking $25 million in general damages and $15 million in punitive damages, as well as separate wrongful death and sexual abuse proceedings. The allegations in those cases have not been adjudicated. The companies had no legal counsel at the time of the receivership hearing, and their insurer had issued a reservation of rights without yet determining whether certain claims would be covered.

Albert Gelman is the interim receiver. Counsel includes Chaitons for BMO, Miller Thomson for the interim receiver, Sotos for Canonaco and TGF for certain class action plaintiffs.

As families prepare for September, local elementary teachers say Trillium Lakelands cannot be treated as just another dot on a provincial map.

In the coming weeks, families across Muskoka will begin the familiar work of getting ready for school: replacing outgrown shoes, finding lunch containers, arranging transportation and helping children prepare for a new classroom.

Behind the scenes, educators are preparing too. They are setting up classrooms, reviewing student needs and getting ready to welcome children back into schools that look very different from one community to the next.

That local difference matters as a new round of collective bargaining gets underway.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario has reported that bargaining is currently stalled over which issues will be negotiated provincially and which will remain at local bargaining tables. ETFO maintains that issues with a genuinely local impact should continue to be addressed locally. Disputed items are expected to be referred to the Ontario Labour Relations Board for a decision.

For the Trillium Lakelands Elementary Teacher Local, this is more than a technical disagreement about bargaining rules. It is about whether decisions affecting local schools will continue to include the people who understand those schools best.

Consider the difference between a small school in Bala and a larger school in Bracebridge. In a small school, one staff absence or one unexpected student-support need can affect schedules across the entire building. A larger school may have more staff, but it may also face crowded classrooms, greater enrolment pressures and more complex supervision demands.

A school in Utterson may face another set of challenges altogether, including long travel distances, access to specialized services and the difficulty of attracting occasional teachers or other qualified staff.

A province-wide approach can establish important standards and provide fair funding. It cannot anticipate every local circumstance.

“Parents do not experience public education as a provincial policy document. They experience it through the school their child walks into every morning. The people sitting at a local bargaining table understand the distances between our communities, the realities of our small schools and the pressures facing our larger ones. That knowledge should continue to matter.”

— Mike De Rose, President, TLETL

TLETL is not arguing that every education issue should be negotiated locally. Some matters clearly require consistent provincial standards and provincial investment.

But bargaining works best when decisions are made at the level where they can be understood and addressed most effectively. Provincial issues belong at the provincial table. Legitimately local issues should remain open to local discussion.

That balance is especially important in a school board as geographically large and diverse as Trillium Lakelands.

Families should also understand that collective bargaining is not only about salaries. Bargaining affects the conditions under which students learn and educators work, including staffing processes, preparation time, student supports, school safety and the ability to respond to circumstances within individual communities.

“Our goal is not to create anxiety as families prepare for September. Our goal is to be honest about what is happening and to explain why it matters. We want a constructive bargaining process that respects provincial responsibilities while still leaving room for local people to solve local problems.”

— Mike De Rose, President, TLETL

Throughout the coming school year, TLETL will provide regular public updates connecting provincial bargaining developments to the schools and communities served by Trillium Lakelands District School Board.

The Local is encouraging the Ministry of Education, school board organizations and education unions to move the process forward respectfully and without unnecessary delay.

Strong public education depends on provincial investment, meaningful dialogue and decisions grounded in the realities of the communities our schools serve.

Buying a vehicle at Cavalcade Ford this August or September will also
help equip the South Muskoka Hospital healthcare teams with the tools and technology
they need to care for patients across the community.

During the dealership’s employee pricing event, Cavalcade Ford will donate $500 to South
Muskoka Hospital Foundation for every new or used vehicle sold in the months of August
& September.

“Cavalcade Ford is proud to support the hospital that our employees, customers and
neighbours count on,” said Will Miller, Owner of Cavalcade Ford. “This event gives our
customers an opportunity to find the right vehicle at employee pricing while helping
strengthen healthcare in our community. Every vehicle sold will generate a $500 donation,
and we hope this campaign encourages other local businesses to find their own way to
support the hospital.”

“Community partnerships like this make a real and immediate difference for local
healthcare,” said Kathryn Devlin, Director of Philanthropy, South Muskoka Hospital
Foundation. “The Miller family has been supporting our hospital for 40 years and funds
raised through this new campaign will help ensure our hospital continues to be able to
provide exceptional care here in South Muskoka.”

Community members are invited to visit Cavalcade Ford during August and September to
explore its selection of new and used vehicles and take part in the employee-pricing event.
For details, visit Cavalcade Ford at 420 Ecclestone Drive, Bracebridge, or call 705-645

New stamps highlight the ecological importance of wolves in Canada

Stamps feature striking, close-up images of wolves found in different parts of the Canadian wilderness

Canada Post has issued new stamps highlighting the role wolves play as a keystone species.

Wolves contribute significantly to the health and biodiversity of the ecosystem. Intelligent hunters often associated with the North and remote Canadian landscapes, the animals also figure prominently in many Indigenous cultures.

A social animal, wolves use co-operative hunting and share responsibility for raising their young – a behaviour seen in only a small percentage of mammals. With sharp senses that help them detect prey up to 1.6 kilometres away, wolves hunt small and large animals, including caribou, deer, elk, moose, bison and even muskoxen.

Wolves featured in different regions of the country

The stamps feature the grey wolf, eastern wolf, Arctic grey wolf and coastal grey wolf. The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is the largest and most widespread wolf in Canada, found everywhere except the Maritimes.

Only slightly bigger than an eastern coyote, the eastern wolf (Canis sp. cf. lycaon) is a federally listed species at risk that lives mainly in central Ontario and southwestern Quebec. It has an estimated population of 200 to 1,000 mature wolves and can be found in Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park and southwestern Quebec.

The Arctic grey wolf (Canis lupus arctos) is a nomadic hunter well adapted to the northern climate, while the coastal grey wolf (Canis lupus crassodon) is a strong swimmer that lives along Canada’s Pacific coast and near-shore islands.

About the stamps

Each stamp features a close-up view of wolves in Canadian landscapes. The booklet cover and interior features additional photographs of coastal grey wolves on Vancouver Island. The stamps are designed by Andrew Perro, featuring photography by Michelle Valberg (Canis lupus crassodon), John E. Marriott Photography (Canis lupus), Ejaz Khan Photography (Canis lupus arctos), Michael Runtz and Steve Dunsford (Canis sp. Cf. lycaon). This stamp issue is printed by Lowe-Martin and includes a booklet of eight Permanent™ domestic rate stamps, an Official First Day Cover, a Souvenir Sheet and four Postage-Paid Postcards. The cancel location is Whitney, Ontario, near the East Gate of Algonquin Provincial Park.

The stamps and collectibles will be available at canadapost.ca and at select postal outlets across Canada beginning on August 13.

An individual from Southern Ontario has been fined $3,500 for the following camping and public land violations:

Jonpaul Evans of Utterson was convicted of unlawfully occupying and depositing items on public lands in violation of a notice. He was fined $3,500.

The Ontario Court of Justice heard that on November 4, 2024, conservation officers located a camping trailer, pickup truck and flat bed trailer parked in the McConnell Lakes Management area of Lasalle Township, where camping is prohibited. On the same date, a second pickup truck was located with a shipping container and mini excavator in McAuslan Township.

An investigation revealed that the items had been deposited in October 2024. Evans left the trucks, camping trailer and shipping container on site throughout the winter. All items except the shipping container were removed by Evans during the summer of 2025. Evans had previously been convicted in 2018 for leaving a camping trailer on public land for an extended period.

Justice of the Peace Monique Mechefske heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on January 22, 2026.

To report a natural resource problem or provide information about an unsolved case, members of the public can call the ministry TIPS line toll free at 1-877-847-7667.
