The City of Orillia is actively recruiting young people to apply to the Orillia Sunshine Youth Senate.

“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and an opportunity like the Orillia Sunshine Youth Senate is a wonderful way for today’s youth to develop those key leadership skills,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Council strongly supports the Orillia Sunshine Youth Senate, not only for the opportunities it presents for Orillia and area youth, but also for the opportunities it presents Council to hear about what matters to our younger citizens. We want to engage our youth in local decision making and provide them first-hand experience in the workings of municipal government.”

The Orillia Sunshine Youth Senate is an advisory committee of City Council comprised of eight youth representatives between the ages of 14 and 19 and three youth representatives between the ages of 13 and 14. The mandate is to work to represent local youth and encourage engagement in arising issues and solutions in the community. Its values are leadership, perseverance, community, and creativity. The Youth Senate is guided and supported by Kevin Gangloff, Orillia Youth Centre Manager.

The deadline for applications is Thursday, May 12, 2022 at noon. To qualify, members must be eligible to attend school in the local area. To apply online or download an application form, please visit orillia.ca/boardscommittees.
