The Huntsville Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continues to receive complaints regarding the unsafe discharge of firearms on public land in the area of OFSC Trail 76 in the Township of Lake of Bays.
On September 5, 2026, at approximately 5:54 p.m., Huntsville OPP officers responded to a report of multiple individuals discharging firearms in a sand and gravel pit near OFSC Trail 76. Police were advised that individuals were shooting rifles and handguns and operating a skeet thrower in close proximity to a nearby family cabin.
During the investigation, officers identified a rifle that had been classified as a prohibited firearm under current federal firearms regulations and remains subject to the federal firearm amnesty program until October 30, 2026, and has been classified as prohibited since 2024.
As a result, Amandeep Singh Waring, 45 years old of Brampton, was charged with:
· Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo
· Breach of Firearms Regulation – Store firearm or restricted weapon
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on Tuesday November 24th, 2026.
The OPP takes firearms incidents very seriously and behaviour that compromises the safety and security of our communities will not be tolerated. Members of the public who utilize public lands must familiarize themselves with The Public Lands Act, which governs the management and use of public lands and forests, formerly referred to as crown lands, in Ontario.
The Huntsville OPP reminds firearm owners that they are responsible for ensuring their firearms remain compliant with current federal legislation and regulations. Anyone using firearms on public land must do so safely and in accordance with all applicable laws.
