MARIPOSA ARTS THEATRE (M.A.T.)PRESENTS
The Gin Game, by D.L. Coburn,
Thursday, June 9 to Sunday, June 19
M.A.T. Warehouse Theatre, 12 Brammer Drive in Orillia
For two strangers who are on different paths, a chance meeting and a card game causes
their worlds to explosively collide. Why are the cards stacked against both of them? Don’t miss this funny and complicated Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, The Gin Game, as it examines how we sometimes make assumptions at our own peril.
Mariposa Arts Theatre (MAT) is honoured to bring this production to Orillia. According to director James Fairbairn, it’s more than a timeless tale of love and loss. “They say it is never too late, but these two characters may be the exception. Can they recover from their tumultuous encounter? Only a sequel can answer that question. A powerful script, two skilled actors and a dedicated production team will take on an extremely emotional ride.”
The show includes some coarse language and violence, and tickets are $30 per person. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more and the venue is mask friendly.
For more than 50 years, MAT has staged 150 live productions ranging from Chicago to Shakespeare to The Wizard of Oz. MAT is a not-for-profit community theatre located in Orillia, offering entertainment for audiences of all ages. The key plot line behind MAT’s success is community support and the devoted group volunteers who perform key roles on both sides of the curtain.
MAT’s fiscal and creative success has benefitted other organizations, including the historic Orillia Opera House as well as supporting bursaries for Orillia-based high school students. One of MAT’s key fundraising events is the monthly Film Night screenings. For more than 18 years, International Film Festival entries are screened at the local Cineplex cinemas. It was the sizeable financial proceeds from these screenings that enabled MAT to fulfill its own lifelong dream of owning their own theatre space.
In 2006, the MAT group’s custom-built rehearsal/performance hall was ready for its own ‘closeup’. Located at 12 Brammer Drive in north Orillia, the intimate 43-seat theatre offers theatre goers from across the GTA and southern Ontario world-class live entertainment within a short drive from their home or the cottage.
Tickets for The Gin Game are available through the Orillia Opera House box office at 705-326-8011 or orilliaoperahouse.ca. Visit mariposaartstheatre.com for more information.
