North Bay, Ont. – Local cadets from Huntsville’s 844 Norseman Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron took to the skies in Earlton during Exercise CHILLY HAWK, held at the Earlton-Timiskaming Regional Airport on March 1, 2026.
“It’s so fun because we can practice how to fly in a safe environment,” said Cadet Flight Corporal (FCpl) Jupin Yi, speaking about the flight simulator she used during the activity. “If we make a mistake in the flight simulator, we can learn from the mistake and not do it in person. It makes us ready for future opportunities.”
Exercise Chilly Hawk brought air cadets from communities in Northern Ontario to a single site to facilitate this exciting, hands-on training opportunity for air cadet squadrons as part of their training program. Cadets got to participate in drone flying and simulator flying throughout the day. Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central) remains committed to providing cadets from across Northern Ontario with aviation opportunities including familiarization flights on aircraft when possible and participation in aviation-focused Area Directed Activities delivered across Northern Ontario.
“Being a cadet is great because you’re always learning new things,” said FCpl Yi. “I’m always waiting for the one day of the week we do our weekly parade nights, because I get to make so many friends too.”
The Air Cadet Program provides youth age 12-18 with hands‑on opportunities in aviation, leadership, and community service, offering safe, structured experiences that help cadets build skills, confidence, and a strong sense of citizenship.
