For more than five decades, Georgian College has been training nurses and other health-care professionals to provide care for the people in our communities, and now Georgian’s Alumni Association Executive Council, which represents more than 90,000 graduates worldwide, has announced a major investment in the nurses of tomorrow.
The alumni association is donating $100,000 to the Frontline Support: Health-care Heroes Closer to Home campaign, which is raising funds to renovate learning spaces, purchase cutting-edge equipment and establish new awards, scholarships and bursaries to benefit the new Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing degree program that is launching this September at the Barrie and Owen Sound campuses.
“This investment is a way for our alumni members to give back to our college and help train the next generation of nurses that study at Georgian,” said Arjun Batra, class of 2007 and chair of Georgian’s Alumni Association Executive Council. “At the same time, the alumni association sees this donation as a way to thank the thousands of Georgian alumni who have been working steadfast on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic since it was first declared more than two years ago.”
“It’s so inspiring to see our alumni community come together to give so generously to our Frontline Support: Health-care Heroes Closer to Home campaign,” said Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, President and CEO of Georgian College. “The need for nurses in our communities is acute, donations like this will ensure our future nurses have every opportunity to study and build their careers locally.”
Georgian has more than 10,000 alumni working in the health-care sector who have graduated from one of Georgian’s Health, Wellness and Sciences programs. The college is a provincial leader in nursing, as well as health-and-wellness education.
Georgian’s Frontline Support campaign aims to raise more than $3 million to renew facilities and equipment, transform technology, foster student success and fund essential community-based research at both the Owen Sound and Barrie campuses. The campaign is guided by two volunteer advisory groups made up of committed community leaders in Grey, Bruce and Simcoe counties who are passionate about supporting the education and training of homegrown registered nurses who graduate from Georgian’s degree program and dedicate their careers to improving health care, ensuring a healthier future for all of us.
