A Midland high school was placed into lockdown today after a student was observed walking into the building with a firearm. Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the OPP were called to Georgian Bay District Secondary School around 11:30 a.m.
A student was seen on surveillance video entering the school while holding a pistol shaped object and police were immediately contacted. The school was placed into lockdown while officers responded and entered the school. The student was located in a classroom and was taken into custody. Police located a water gun which resembles a Sig Sauer handgun.
The investigation is on-going and the names of the involved young person will not be released due to provisions contained in the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The lockdown was lifted at approximately 11:45p.m. All occupants of the school are safe. Police would like to thank staff and students of the school for their cooperation during this stressful incident.
