The fall season is now upon us and the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding drivers to remain vigilant for deer on the roadways. This time of year, deer activity increases, leading to a higher risk of collisions between vehicles and wildlife.
Why the Increase? During the fall months, deer are more active during their mating season and are often on the move searching for food. This can lead to unexpected encounters with vehicles, especially at dawn and dusk when visibility is reduced.
Safety Tips for Drivers:
Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for deer crossing signs and be especially cautious in areas known for high deer populations.
Reduce Speed: Slower speeds give you more time to react if deer suddenly appear on the road.
Use High Beams Wisely: When driving at night, use high beams when possible to increase visibility, but switch to low beams when approaching other vehicles to avoid blinding them.
Watch for Movement: If you see one deer, be on the lookout for more, as they often travel in groups.
Brake Firmly, but Don’t Swerve: If a collision seems imminent, it’s safer to brake firmly rather than swerving, which could lead to losing control of your vehicle or colliding with another car.
Report Collisions: If you do hit a deer, report the incident to Wellington County OPP. This helps track deer populations and road safety.
What to Do If You See a Deer: If you see a deer on or near the road, reduce your speed and be prepared to stop and use your horn to encourage the deer to move away.
Stay Safe This Fall: By being aware and prepared, we can all help reduce the number of deer-related accidents. Let’s work together to ensure a safe driving environment for everyone.
