Ontario’s most vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities face extraordinary food insecurity. However, with the demand for nutritious and affordable meals growing daily, Meals on Wheels continues to rise to meet the need.
During March, Meals on Wheels providers across North America participate in a month-long campaign known as March for Meals. Across Ontario, Meals on Wheels programs have enlisted elected officials, local celebrities, and other prominent figures to deliver meals safely, speak out for seniors, and raise awareness for the power of Meals on Wheels.
Muskoka Seniors is the local Meals on Wheels provider. They offer hot meals, frozen meals, and a grocery delivery program to Huntsville and surrounding areas. Muskoka Seniors expect to deliver over 14,000 meals this year. This year’s March for Meals campaign activates community champions such as olympian Dara Howell, actor and local radio host Grant Nickalls, Mayor Nancy Alcock, and local restaurants to help draw attention to the importance and essential needs of the Meals on Wheels program.
Dara Howell, Canadian freestyle skier, a gold medal winner at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and local Huntsville champion, volunteered for Muskoka Seniors by delivering meals to clients. After her experience, she shared her feeling about Meals on Wheels in Huntsville, “It means a lot. From what I saw today, having this service available to the community is huge. People know they have support. If they need something, Muskoka Seniors is there to help them. This service is super important to Huntsville, and the more people that can get involved and help out, the better. Meals on Wheels is needed in our community.”
Additionally, Canvas Brewing Company is hosting a Cornhole Tournament on April 1st in partnership with Muskoka Seniors. The sign-up cost for a team of two is $60 + tax, and 50% of the entry fee will directly support Muskoka Seniors’ Meals on Wheels program. There will also be live music from 3-6 pm, prizes, and more!
