Join the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka as they walk to raise awareness and funds to support people living with dementia and their caregivers locally.

Muskoka, Ontario – Host sponsored by IG Wealth Management, the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka will hold its annual walk this year in both Bracebridge and Huntsville to ensure even greater participation and awareness.

“So many more Canadians are living with dementia than ever before. Says Interim Executive Director Pamela Leeder. It is estimated that nearly 300,000 Ontarians live with this disease and the numbers are growing. Locally we have over 30% of our population who are over the age of 65 and we know this is a risk factor for dementia. Hosting these walks in both Bracebridge and Huntsville will help raise the needed awareness and funds to support those living with dementia and their caregivers locally” said Leeder.

Historically, the walk has been the organization’s biggest fundraiser and brings over 100 volunteers out in support of the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka. The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will take place on May 25 in Bracebridge and May 26 in Huntsville and will host community members, donors, volunteers, other health services providers, and the public.   This is a fun event where the hope is for all to engage and support reducing the stigmas related to a dementia diagnosis. The events will start at noon. There will be opening ceremonies, free BBQ, prizes for participants, children activities, a pet area and community spirit.

“We know that this disease impacts a large portion of our population given the demographics of both season and year-round residents,” says Alzheimer Society of Muskoka Board President Rick Hallam. “It is for this reason that so many of our board and team are committed to raising awareness and funds for programs and services locally”, said Hallam.

The organization provides services that range from individual and group supportive counselling, physical and cognitive exercise programs, respite services for care partners, and health system navigation support.

The Alzheimer Society of Muskoka has been providing services to people living with dementia and their caregivers since 1983 and relies heavily on donations to support continuing programs. The goal of the organization is to alleviate the personal consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and to promote research.
