The Almaguin Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking the public’s assistance as officers investigate two suspicious fires in the Almaguin Highlands area.
On October 26, 2026, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers were dispatched to a structure fire on Highway 518 West in the Municipality of McMurrich/Monteith. Upon arrival, officers learned members of the McMurrich/Monteith Fire Department had already brought a fire involving a local chip truck under control. (Occurrence # E261550641)
On October 27, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., while conducting general patrol, officers discovered a fire at the Township of Strong Landfill located on Forest Lake Road in the Township of Strong. Members of the Sundridge-Strong Fire Department attended the scene and extinguished the fire before it could spread further. (Occurrence # E261555149)
Due to the suspicious nature of both fires, the Office of the Fire Marshal was notified.
At this time, investigators have no information to suggest the incidents are related.
Anyone with information regarding either incident is asked to contact the Almaguin Highlands OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference the appropriate occurrence number. Residents, businesses, and motorists who were in either area at the time of the fires are also encouraged to review any available security, surveillance, or dash camera footage and contact police if they have information that may assist investigators.
