Doug Shand of Oro-Medonte is the latest Grand Prize winner in the Soldiers’ 50/50 Raffle, collecting the $25,378 jackpot for May.
“You’re kidding! Oh my goodness,” said Shand when he received the phone call letting him know he had won more than $25,000.
Shand has a very personal connection to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH). “Soldiers’ has been good to me. I had cancer surgery there last year, and I’m now cancer free, I can’t thank Soldiers’ enough.”
Shand went for a routine scope at OSMH last August, during which the cancer was discovered, “Dr. [Nicholas] Bauman found a suspicious polyp,” explained Shand’s wife, Sandra Hori. Dr. Bauman then performed the surgery, and by January, Shand’s MRI was clear and he was declared cancer-free.
Shand added, “They caught it very, early. We were very lucky, and I still have my hair.”
Coming out of COVID and into a cancer diagnosis has made for a difficult few years for Shand and his wife. The couple already has some ideas in mind as to how they will enjoy Shand’s big win.
“We have some projects around the house we’d like to do, and we’re hoping to do some more traveling,” said Shand.

The June raffle is already underway, with two (2) special $1,000 Early Bird prizes! The Early Bird draws will take place on June 13th and June 20th, and the Grand Prize will be drawn on June 27th.
