Toddler Dies In Bancroft After Being Forgotten In Hot Vehicle

Bancroft OPP is investigating the sudden death of a 23-month-old child.

On June 23, 2022, jst before 4 p.m., officers were called to a parking lot on Monck Road for a child that was located in a vehicle with no vital signs. The child was transported to the hospital by Paramedics and shortly after pronounced deceased.

An investigation was commenced by the OPP Bancroft Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

The OPP investigation, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, is continuing.

Paul Jenkins, the Mayor of Bancroft, told Global News the deceased child was part of a family he had known for 30 years.

Jenkins said 23-month-old Everett Smith died last Thursday despite several attempts to resuscitate him.

Jenkins said the mother meant to drop Everett off at daycare in the morning but accidentally left him in the car while she went to work at North Hastings High School.

A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
