As part of the Town’s commitment to honour the healing journey of the indigenous community and participate in the ongoing process of reconciliation, a Commitment Rock has been installed adjacent to Town Hall. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. While a formal ceremony has not yet been scheduled, residents are able to view the Commitment Rock and reflect, listen, learn, and heal. The Town will continue to consult with indigenous educators and formally recognize the installation in the near future.
Mayor Terziano reflects on how the Commitment Rock installation is another step toward Council’s commitment,
“The installation will be a lasting reminder that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, an acknowledgement of the tragedy of the residential schools and a commitment to reconciliation,” said Mayor Terziano.
The rock has been engraved with the Town’s land acknowledgement statement to recognize that the Town is built on traditional territory of indigenous people and incorporates bronze moccasins to honour the lives of residential school children and survivors.
The Town of Huntsville is committed to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
