Town Of Gravenhurst Celebrates Earth Day 2022

0

Earth Day (April 22) is a time when more than a billion people in 190 different countries raise awareness of environmental challenges and solutions. The Town of Gravenhurst is committed to investing in our planet by taking action to combat climate change and plan for a sustainable future.

With the objective of maximizing both the messaging and citizen involvement, the Town of Gravenhurst has partnered with Earth Day Canada to help promote environmental protection and awareness to its residents, businesses, and community organizations.

The Town has had a long-standing commitment to reduce its environmental footprint, whether it be via day-to-day operations or through its various capital initiatives. These changes to our municipal operations are also in keeping with a motion passed by Council declaring a climate emergency supporting initiatives to protect the Town’s economy, community, and ecosystem (July 20, 2021).

Testament to this pledge is demonstrated by these recent and ongoing projects:

Recent projects:

  1. Replacement of High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) streetlights to LEDs
  2. Replacement of metal halide lights to LED outdoor sport courts/fields

Ongoing Initiatives Specific to Municipal Buildings:

  1. Installation of Touchless Water Faucets
  2. Installation of Motion and Occupancy Sensors
  3. Window Replacements
  4. Use of Eco-Friendly Salt at Facility Walkways and Pathways
  5. Installation of High-Efficiency Furnaces
  6. Insulation Upgrades
  7. Annual Spring Tree Sales

Upcoming initiatives in 2022

  1. Installation of 3 EV charging Stations (To be located at various Muskoka Wharf-area municipal parking lots)
  2. Procurement of a SUV Electric Vehicle Hybrid
  3. Development of an Urban Forestry Management Plan

The Town also supports Environment Week Canada. During Environment Week (June 5-12), the Town is eager to collaborate with individuals, school groups and community organizations for its “Team-Up to Clean-Up,” initiative. “Team-Up to Clean-Up” is a new Town-wide annual community clean-up program to encourage community members to help keep our road corridors and other outside public spaces ‘clean and green’.
