Shawn brings an impressive wealth of knowledge, experience, and proven leadership skills to the position, anchored by a successful and long-serving career in public service, including seventeen (17) years with the Township.

Prior to assuming his CAO role, Shawn held the position of Director, Operations and Community Services overseeing a diverse portfolio including infrastructure, operations, roads, recreation, and special events. Shawn holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Management, and various Certificates focused on leadership, innovation, and public administration.

In Ontario, every drinking water system is subject to legislative requirements and regulations of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Each year, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) undertakes an inspection of Drinking Water Systems to confirm compliance with MEPC legislation, as well as conformance with Ministry drinking water related policies. Inspections are focused on the source, treatment and distribution components, as well as water system management practices, including: operator certifications, operational procedures, and emergency planning.

Mayor Greenlaw commented that “reliable and safe drinking water is of the utmost importance for the community of Oro-Medonte. Environmental Services staff are commended for their continued professionalism, and efforts and achievement in operating, managing and maintaining the Township’s Municipal Drinking Water Systems resulting in a 100% rating from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.”

Appointment of the Deputy Mayor formed part of the Inaugural Meeting council agenda. The process to appoint the Deputy Mayor followed By-Law No. 2021-094 passed on August 18, 2021 (view By-Law here: bit.ly/3uyxfPC), and Section 10 of Procedural By-Law No. 2017-165 as amended (view By-Law here: bit.ly/3F8M7ZT.)

Three (3) members of Council expressed interest in the seat, with two (2) members of Council appointed to the position for a term of two (2) years each; providing an opportunity for both Deputy Mayor’s to serve and experience the role throughout the 2022-2026 term of Council. Councillor Peter Lavoie was appointed as Deputy Mayor effective immediately and will serve until December 31, 2024, and Councillor Lori Hutcheson was appointed Deputy Mayor effective January 1, 2025 until the conclusion of this term of Council.

Through the My Main Street Community Activator Program, the Craighurst Public Art Project received $40,000 to install unique and beautiful seven-foot (7) tree sculptures at business locations in the village of Craighurst. The tree sculptures were designed and fabricated locally. Following a call for artists and a juried competition, seven (7) local artists were selected to visually enhance the tree sculptures.

Mayor Harry Hughes commented that “it is wonderful to see the tree sculptures unveiled for the enjoyment of residents, business owners, and visitors to our community. The extraordinary talent of local artists has shone brightly through on each and every art tree, with reflections of the natural beauty and the rich history of Oro-Medonte. Please make time to take the self-guided tour and experience the public art project for yourself. Once again, thank you to the Government of Canada, through FedDev Ontario, and all participating agencies, for providing this exceptional opportunity for the Township of Oro-Medonte, and communities across southern Ontario.”

Naloxone hydrochloride is a fast-acting drug often delivered by a nasal spray used to temporarily reverse the effects of opioid drug overdoses or poisoning. Opioids are a group of drugs that includes morphine, heroin, methadone, fentanyl and oxycodone.

In 2019, initiated by Councillor Scott, Oro-Medonte Council was provided with video training regarding administration of naloxone hydrochloride, and encouraged to have access to naloxone kits.

Taking into consideration the consistent increase of opioid related medical emergencies in Simcoe County, inclusive of two cities, Township Council unanimously supported availability of naloxone kits in Township facilities open to the public, complemented by a social media campaign, and information on the Township’s website. Each Township facility open to the public will have two (2) naloxone kits, providing four (4) doses of naloxone hydrochloride.

Recognizing the tragedies associated with opioid overdoses and poisonings, the Provincial Government recently passed Bill 88 which includes changes to the Occupational Health & Safety Act regarding the availability of naloxone kits in workplaces, and providing training for employees to administer naloxone hydrochloride.

Councillor Shawn Scott commented that “in the past, an overdose was attributed to excessive drug use, but with the availability of fentanyl, it has become drug poisoning. The stigma of overdoses being directly related to societal perception of a drug addict, continues to hamper the ability to help people impacted by the devastation of opioid misuse and addiction – these people can be our children, brothers, sisters, friends and parents.”

Craighurst Guardian Pharmacy located at 2054 Horseshoe Valley Road West has offered their assistance to supply interested community members with naloxone kits, and education regarding naloxone hydrochloride.

Mayor Harry Hughes commented that “Council recognizes the serious and significant health impacts of excessive opioid use. We are taking proactive steps to ensure availability of naloxone kits in Township facilities open to the public.”

Members of the public are reminded to call 911 in the event of a medical emergency and are encouraged to learn more about naloxone hydrochloride and naloxone kits, offered free of charge at many Ontario pharmacies, by visiting: ontario.ca/page/get-naloxone-kits-free.
