Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision at a local intersection in Midland which resulted in impaired charges.

On June 22, 2026 at approximately 10:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a pole at Yonge Street and Eighth Street. As a result of the investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired operation and transported to the detachment for further testing. During the arrest and subsequent search, officers located a quantity of suspected illegal drugs.

As a result of the investigation, Cody McFarlane, 31 years of Midland, has been charged with:

• Operation While Impaired

• Dangerous Operation

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Other Drugs

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on August 6, 2026. All drivers charged with impaired-related offences are subject to an immediate 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and a seven-day vehicle impound.

The OPP reminds motorists that impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death on Ontario roads. Alcohol and drugs affect everyone differently, and no amount of impairment is safe when operating a vehicle. Plan ahead and never drive while impaired. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 911.

Midland, ON – On Wednesday, May 6, local McDonald’s restaurants in Midland, Midland Walmart, and Elmvale celebrated McHappy Day®, marking the first time the event was led by new owners George and Marian Khalil. Together with the community, their inaugural McHappy Day raised $40,000, which will be split between Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) and the Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) Foundation.

Funds raised through this year’s event will help replace an aging fetal health and maternal monitoring system at GBGH—an important tool that provides continuous monitoring during delivery to ensure a safe birth experience and quick response if concerns arise.

Throughout the day, a portion of proceeds from all menu items, along with the sale of McHappy Day hearts, hats and socks, contributed to the funds raised locally, as the community once again showed its strong support for both RMHC and GBGH.

“Seeing our community come together for McHappy Day has been incredibly meaningful for us as the new owners of these restaurants,” said George and Marian Khalil, owner/operators of the Midland and Elmvale McDonald’s locations. “We are truly grateful for the generosity, kindness, and support shown by our guests, crew, and local partners. Every visit, donation, and smile helped make a real difference for families who need it most. Midland and Elmvale have welcomed us with open arms, and we are proud to be part of a community that cares so deeply about helping others. Thank you for making our first McHappy Day together so special.”

Local volunteers and community partners helped bring the event to life, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere in each restaurant. Their participation reflects the strong community spirit that continues to make McHappy Day a success year after year.

“McHappy Day is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when a community comes together,” said Robyn Kaczanowski, community giving officer, GBGH Foundation. “We are incredibly grateful to George and Marian, their team, and everyone who contributed to this year’s success. These funds will help purchase critical monitoring technology for our tiniest patients at GBGH.”

On the afternoon of April 9, 2026, officers responded to a traffic complaint in Tiny Township after reports of a driver exhibiting signs of impairment leaving a local business. Officers located the suspect vehicle at the registered owner’s address. The driver was exhibiting signs of alcohol impairment, and open alcohol was also located within the vehicle.

As a result of this investigation, Ljiljana Reiner, 57 years, of Tiny Township, was charged with:

Operation While Impaired

Operation Over 80 Milligrams

Novice Driver – Blood Alcohol Above Zero

Driving Motor Vehicle With Open Container of Liquor

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on May 21, 2026.

Later that evening, in a parking lot on Simcoe Road 93 in Midland, police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver seated in a running vehicle. The 74 year-old male from Midland registered an “Alert” on a roadside screening device, and a seven-day administrative driver’s licence suspension was issued.

A third incident occurred just after midnight when officers conducted a traffic stop on Highway 400 in Tay Township for an equipment violation. Investigation revealed the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under suspension and had cannabis readily available inside the vehicle. Further cannabis was located during a search, resulting in multiple charges to a 40 year-old male of London under the Highway Traffic Act and Cannabis Control Act.

The OPP relies on timely information from the public to identify and stop impaired drivers before serious harm occurs. Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver is urged to call 911 immediately. Reports from concerned community members continue to play a critical role in preventing tragedies on Ontario roads.
