Haliburton Highlands OPP are investigating a single motor vehicle collision were the driver fled on foot, but was located and arrested a short time later with the assistance of the public.
On March 28, 2023, shortly before 1:30 pm, Haliburton Highlands OPP were on patrol on Highway 118 near the 25th Line in Algonquin Highlands. The officer observed a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and was notified of a Highway Traffic Act offence by the Automatic Licence Plate Recognition ALPR camera installed in the cruiser. The officer lost sight of the vehicle, turned around, and subsequently located the vehicle in the ditch. The driver had fled the vehicle and was located after a short foot pursuit.
Two people from this motor vehicle were transported to a medical facility for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of investigation into this matter, Amleto Casella (age 42) of Minden has been arrested and charged with:
- Fail to comply with release order -three counts
- Possession of cocaine
- Fail to stop at accident resulting in bodily harm
- Careless driving
- Drive while under suspension
- Fail to remain
The vehicle was impounded for seven days. The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Minden, on May 3, 2023.
