The Ontario government is investing $140.5 million of provincial funding in 144 drinking water infrastructure projects through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). This includes provincial funding for three projects in Parry Sound – Muskoka:
- $1,571,283.36 for the South River Watermain and High Lift Pump Rehabilitation
- $1,665,833.40 for the Town of Bracebridge Water Supply Resiliency project
- $916,500.00 for the Shawanaga First Nation New Water Treatment Plant
This funding will help provide increased access to clean, reliable drinking water in small, rural, and remote communities. The ICIP Green Infrastructure Stream is a federal-provincial program that makes it possible for communities to get shovel-ready projects underway, while supporting economic prosperity and bringing long-lasting benefits to communities across the province.
“Small and rural communities often need help from other levels of government with funding for expensive infrastructure projects like water systems, so I am thrilled that water infrastructure rehabilitation and upgrades in South River, Bracebridge, and Shawanaga First Nation will receive provincial funding. These projects will ensure that people in Parry Sound – Muskoka have access to clean water for generations to come,” said MPP Norman Miller.
Water projects such as these are crucial to creating sustainable communities and resilient infrastructure. The South River Watermain and High Lift Pump Rehabilitation will upgrade pipes, rehabilitate infrastructure, and upgrade high-lift pumps to ensure adequate fire flow levels. The Town of Bracebridge Water Supply Resiliency project will upgrade the water distribution system, and the funding for Shawanaga First Nation will provide a replacement water treatment system for two new groundwater supply wells. These investments in critical infrastructure will help build stronger, healthier and safer communities in Parry Sound – Muskoka.
Previously, the ICIP program has provided provincial and federal funding for a number of important infrastructure projects across Parry Sound-Muskoka including improvements to Dillon Road in the community of Carling, the replacement of the Etwell Bridge in Huntsville, the Snider’s Bay Bridge in Gravenhurst and the Black Bridge in Bracebridge, phase one of the Huntsville transit ridership growth plan, road reconstruction in Wasauksing First Nation and construction of the Parry Sound Pool and Wellness Centre.
