Exciting news from Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, as they unveil groundbreaking advancements in CGMH’s colon cancer screening program.
CGMH is proud to introduce two new innovative tools to enhance the program and improve patient outcomes:
GI Genius Intelligent Endoscopy Module
Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the GI Genius acts as a second set of eyes to assist surgeons during colonoscopies, identifying suspicious polyps with unparalleled accuracy. Continuously learning from a vast database of over 13 million images, the GI Genius provides real-time analysis and comparison, significantly enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of polyp detection. CGMH is one of only a few hospitals in Canada with this groundbreaking technology.
Olympus X1 Endoscopy System
Integrated with the GI Genius, the Olympus X1 enhances visibility and precision, making it easier to identify abnormal tissue growths within the colon. This advanced system uses state-of-the-art imaging technology to enhance texture, brightness and colour, helping surgeons discover subtle differences that contribute to higher detection rates. CGHM is the second hospital in Canada to put this high-definition technology to use.

These new additions support CGMH’s robust colon cancer screening program which conducts over 2,000 colonoscopies annually. Colorectal cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Ontario for both men and women. Early detection dramatically increases the chances of survival, with nine out of ten individuals effectively treated when the disease is caught in its early stages. By harnessing this new technology for cancer screening, CGMH is improving early diagnosis which will ultimately help save lives.
