Town Of Gravenhurst Observing ‘No Mow May’

The Town of Gravenhurst is asking residents to hold off mowing their lawns in May.

The request is part of the ‘No Mow May’ initiative, which takes place in various communities across Ontario and elsewhere.

The intent of the month-long campaign is to allow grass and wildflowers a chance to flourish, providing bees and other pollinators a good source of nutrition.

“No Mow May is a great opportunity for all of us to play a small part in helping our environment,” Mayor Heidi Lorenz said.

At a meeting in March, in response to residents’ requests that the town participate in ‘No Mow May’, council agreed to a one-year pilot project. In doing so, council suspended for the month certain bylaw regulations related to lawn maintenance.

Participation in ‘No Mow May’ is voluntary. Residents can still mow their lawns if they wish.

Following the campaign, staff will review the success of the overall project.

Staff will present a related report to council in early 2024 and seek further direction.
