Around 2:19 pm on October 21, 2024, the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Fighters responded to a structure fire on Springfield Road in Huntsville. Crews from Station 1 Huntsville, Station 5 Port Sydney, and Station 4 Baysville including 20 firefighters and 7 trucks, responded to the event.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fully involved detached garage with extensions into the forest. Fire crews acted quickly to contain the fire and avoid the flames spreading to the home. Unfortunately, heat from the fire damaged the vinyl siding on the home, but firefighters prevented any further damage to the house by cooling the heat with water. There were no injuries reported and damage is estimated to be at least $250,000. The cause of the fire could not be determined due to the extensive damage caused by the fire. However, the fire started in the garage and has been classified as accidental.
Water Tanker Trucks from Station One, Four and Five were critical in preventing the spread of fire as there were no hydrants near the fire. The fire was safely extinguished by 4:01 p.m.; no injuries were reported.
The Fire Department wants to remind residents to plan ahead. While no one was home during the fire, it’s a reminder that fire safety is essential for everyone. Always secure and store flammable items properly and check your electrical systems for any signs of wear. Any unused household hazardous waste products such as aerosols, paints, and flammable liquids can be brought to 169 Madil Church Road in Huntsville or 1020 Oxtongue Rapids Road in Lake of Bays on scheduled dates for collection by the District of Muskoka. These products can increase the size of a fire or make it more intense. Make it a habit to inspect your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and develop an emergency plan for your family. By taking these precautions, you can help safeguard your property and prevent future fires, even when you’re away.
