The District of Muskoka’s Engineering and Public Works department is inviting residents to learn more about how infrastructure, construction and operations staff keep critical services running safely and smoothly 24/7, 365 days a year. The first Public Works Palooza is set for Saturday, May 25, 2024 in recognition of National Public Works Week.
The theme this year is, ‘advancing quality of life for all.’ Residents can ask questions and see what trucks and equipment are used to provide service to Muskoka residents.
“The commitment and pride staff have in their work and the difference they make across the District to all of our residents, business owners and visitors is unprecedented,” said James Steele, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works. “They connect our communities with a road network that is safe, ensure clean drinking water and connect plumbing to our wastewater treatment facilities to send wastewater back into the environment safely, and manage residential solid waste, from the collection of materials to diverting as much as possible and disposing of the remainder in our landfill.”
Muskoka Paramedic Services will also be in attendance as they celebrate Paramedic Services Week from May 19 to 25. Paramedics are dedicated 24/7, 365 days a year to providing medical care first to those with acute illnesses or injuries while on route to a nearby hospital. Paramedics also provide community paramedicine to help residents stay in their homes longer by filling in gaps within their care plan.
“As we approach this year’s Paramedic Services Week I find myself reflecting on my first day as Chief of Muskoka Paramedic Services (MPS) on May 24, 2016 and how proud I was to join a great group of professionals,” said Chief Jeff McWilliam. “That couldn’t be truer today. Our services have grown through the support of District Council both past and present to evolve into the proactive and reactive service it is today. I am proud of the work Muskoka paramedics do every day and, on behalf of the MPS leadership team, extend our sincerest thank you for all that they do for our communities and each other. If you see a paramedic be sure to thank them!”
Along with attending the Public Works Palooza, Muskoka Paramedic Services will be visiting local schools to give presentations throughout the week.
“Our highlight of the week will see Muskoka Paramedic Services engaging with other community first responders and agencies in a mock scenario/car accident at Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School (BMLSS),” Chief McWilliam. “The scenario aims to educate the BMLSS youth of the dangers of driving while impaired through a dramatized version of a real incident. Students will be able to witness the staged tragedy firsthand while seeing the various first responders utilize their equipment and training.”

This free, family-friendly event is scheduled for Saturday, May 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rosewarne Landfill (1091 Rosewarne Dr., Bracebridge), rain or shine.
