Vehicle Stop By OPP Leads To Weapons Charges In Midland

A vehicle stop on Simcoe County Road 93, Midland has resulted in the seizure of prohibited edged weapons. Officers of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment on general patrol stopped a vehicle with two occupants in the area of Lanigan Drive, Midland to investigate a possible Highway Traffic Act violation at approximately 2:32 am. April 21, 2024.

During the course of the investigation a number of edged weapons were seized, some being classified as prohibited weapons.

As a result of this investigation the driver of the vehicle Taras Popovitch 44-years of Penetanguishene has been charged criminally with the following offences.

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon at Unauthorized Place
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Drive no licence
  • failed to surrender insurance slip
  • obstruct plate

Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on June 6, 2024.

The second occupant of the vehicle, Patricia Jadwiga Dawid 38-years also of Penetanguishene was charged criminally with the offence of Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.
