In November 2022, students across Trillium Lakeland District School Board (TLDSB) took part in the regional division of the Skills Ontario Junk Drawer Races. The program is open to all students across the province and offers a variety of opportunities for students to develop new skills and learn about opportunities in the skilled trades and technologies.

Grade 8 students at Muskoka Falls Public School took part in the Hydraulic Crane Challenge. Within this challenge, teams designed and built a functional hydraulic crane using cardboard, rubber tubing, and syringes. The cranes had to be fully operational lifting a specified weight and moving it from one drop off/pick up point to another, with speed being a factor. A team from Muskoka Fall Public School comprised of students Ava Arcand, Paige Medley, Felecia Palechuk, and Madi Sedore came second overall in this category at the regional competition.

Grade 5 students at Jack Callaghan Public School took part in the Cardboard Car Races. Within this challenge, teams built a rubber band powered car out of cardboard that had to travel 15 feet. Jack Callaghan Public School’s team of Alyssa Durley, Jack Jewell, and Hunter Clarke came first overall in this category at the regional competition.

The two teams will now advance to the provincial competition to compete against medalists from all regions at the elementary level. Submission deadline is Friday, March 3, with winners announced on Monday, March 27.
