Snow Squalls Expected To Develop Tonight For Midland, Coldwater, Barrie

Snow squall watch issued for:
Midland – Coldwater – Orr Lake,
Barrie – Collingwood – Hillsdale,

Current details:
Snow squalls are expected to develop tonight.

Hazards:
Local snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 cm possible by noon on Thursday.
Visibilities may be reduced to near zero in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Timing:
Beginning tonight and continuing through Thursday morning.

Discussion:
Snow squalls are expected to develop off of Georgian Bay tonight and continue through Thursday morning. As the winds shift from northwesterly to westerly Thursday morning, the bands of lake effect snow are expected to shift north and out of region. Snows squalls are expected to redevelop Thursday night.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.

Snow squall watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
