Several Residents Are Reporting They Are Getting Service Canada Scam Calls

17

There are many sophisticated frauds and scams in Canada. There are frauds which attempt to mimic real federal government services to gain access to personal and financial information.

The Killaloe OPP has received several calls from concerned community residents in relation to a scam which involves a phone call, or a recorded message received from Service Canada. In this scam, the caller advises that there is a warrant for your arrest, and suggests that you should speak with an officer to clear the matter. Once you engage with the caller, personal information such as social insurance numbers (SIN) numbers, and credit card information is shared. The caller may ask you to complete a financial transaction. The Muskoka411 office received this call yesterday.

You should remain vigilant when anyone claiming to be from Service Canada, or any other government agencies contact you. Service Canada will only send you information you have requested and notifications through services for which you have signed up for.

Never give out personal information unless you have verified the source and the person asking for it is legally entitled to that information. For more information please visit: the Canadian Anti-Fraud centre online at www.antifraudcentre.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.

  1. People are also receiving calls from other parties. Claiming they called them. Wich is not true. The scammers are calling with spoofed caller id. And the other parties are calling the spoofed I’d number back saying “you’re trying to scan me” . Contact the Canadian anti fraud.

  2. In Simcoe County real government employees are targeting former OW recipients with fake overpayment claims and threatening to garnishee their EI income if they don’t make payments voluntarily. They say if you don’t agree you can take it to tribunal, which for many people a long involved legal process is beyond their functional abilities.

  3. I was frauded by someone who claimed to be an RCMP officer and Todd me to buy 10 Google Play cards and tell him the numbers and send him pictures. If i did not be said that they will come to my house and arrest me because i have an outstanding warrant for my arrest

  4. I hope you didnt fall for that and buy the google cards! its serious common sense…why on earth would the CRA ask for payment with any other form than money. I feel bad but if you’re that stupid to fall for somebody from the government requesting you pay with Google cards you deserve to get scammed. people.use your heads

  5. Just got a recorded message from this number ‭+1 (705) 791-5174‬ claiming they are service Ontario & have a warrant for my arrest. I stayed on the line, a woman came on and I asked “what’s this about” she said “ your being arrested” I said “for what” I got no answer & she hung up….July 13,2020.

  6. I just got call saying they were service canada and it was about my social insurance number being fraudulently used. The number was 1 705-266-4259 recorded message which asked me to press 1 to speak to an agent. Once answered I asked them why I have recieved no such notification from service canada. And they are using this number to call me. Then he hung up lol.

  7. I’m in Montreal…just got a call from 1-800-376-4160 claiming to be Service Canada…recorded…same as above Jamie’s experience! I just hung up…didn’t press ‘1’ …my husband received several this week as well.

  8. I got a call from someone claiming to be from Service Canada, wanting to ask some personal questions regarding my recent application. I asked him “What application” and he said he couldn’t tell me that. I told him to screw off.

  9. 2 calls from 2 different (403) phone numbers today for the Service Canada scam. A recorded message 1st saying press 1 to speak with an agent immediately. I asked for their name and said ‘so if I call Service Canada and ask for you, the call will get forwarded to you?, they said “sure”, then hang up.

  10. All these calls are coming from India being an indian I recognize their voice easily I got 4 calls in one month I always press 1 to speak and than abuse them in indian language to which they abuse back in indian language why is the rcmp not doing anything

  11. I receive these calls at least 4 to 5 times a week. I tell them I work for service Canada and they are impersonating a government agency and that it’s against the law. They usually hang up right away. I have had one asking me what department I work for? I said I work for CRA and they wanted my first and last name. I said why would I give you my information. I said everyone knows you guys are a scam trying to take advantage of people. He said u r a scammer and hung up. Usually they have very heavy Indian accents this guy spoke pretty good with little accent. My spouse doesn’t work for the government agency and said there is no way that the government would call to say ur going to be arrested. If it was a government agency they usually follow up sending a letter not a phone call.

  12. 438-884-5962 and 438-884-3443 scam calls from Service Canada. Recorded message says there’s fraud associated with your SIN number and press ! to speak to an agent. As soon as I doubted who she was, in the first 10 seconds, she hung up!

  13. I received one of those calls the other day. I had my Air Horn on standby. I pressed ‘1’ and some guy started talking, I took my Air Horn and blasted it at my phone. He hung up after I blew out his eardrums! LOL! I can’t imagine the sound he would have heard going through his headset! LOL.
