In recognition of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s (RVH) commitment to environmental stewardship, the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care has awarded the health centre the Green Hospital of the Year award.
The award was presented based on data submitted to the 2021 Green Hospital Scorecard program, which rendered RVH the highest score and top performer of all participating hospitals within their peer group.
“This prestigious award gives a nod to the many initiatives RVH undertakes each year to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing energy use and implementing a recycling and waste management strategy,” says Darrell Sewell, RVH Vice President, People Experience & Chief Human Resources. “I am incredibly proud of our hardworking teams who continue to implement innovative ideas and strive to make our health centre more environmentally friendly.”
The Green Hospital Scorecard is a comprehensive healthcare benchmarking tool that measures energy and water conservation, waste management and recycling, corporate commitment, and pollution prevention.
For 2021, RVH was recognized for organic waste and blue bin programs, battery and scrap metal recycling, and initiatives to reduce energy waste such as the HVAC set back program during off-hours and implementation of strategies to cool the building during the summer months reducing energy consumption.
“We are very excited to receive this award in recognition of our efforts in striving for a cleaner, greener RVH not just for ourselves, but for our patients,” says Rab Carrigan, RVH Supervisor, Facilities & Building Operations. “There is still so much we can do, and I know TEAM RVH can achieve whatever they set their mind to.”
