Scott Barry Sylvester 36-years-of no fixed address Midland, has been arrested by members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment in relation to a fire that broke out at 288 King Street Midland at approximately 10:26 p.m. on March 5, 2024.
OPP officers responded with members of the Midland Fire Service to the King Street commercial location that has apartments on the second floor and were successful in clearing the building of all occupants with no injuries reported. The fire caused significant smoke and water damage to both floors of the building.
An investigation into the cause of the fire was commenced with the assistance of personnel from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall (OFM), Midland Fire Services, OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and members of the Crime Unit attached to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment.
Through investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested on March 8, 2024 and charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
- Arson – Disregard for Human Life
- Break, Enter a place – commit indictable offence
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
The accused remains in custody and will appear at a future date before the Ontario Court of Justice.
