On January 8, 2026, the Province of Ontario welcomed the first of three trains ordered as part of the Northlander train’s anticipated return. The Northlander will connect Toronto to Timmins and Cochrane in the north, and has 16 stops along the way, including Huntsville.
The delivery of the first train marks a major milestone towards the return of the Northlander. Deputy Mayor Armour and Councillor Stone attended a ceremony on behalf of the Town of Huntsville as the train service will have a considerable impact on the community.
“The return of the Northlander has been a priority for our residents because it makes for more reliable travel to and from the Greater Toronto Area that is less weather and traffic dependent,” shares Deputy Mayor Armour. “Residents will be able to travel to Toronto and back in a day, meaning increased access to essential services like healthcare and airports, or even to go to special events like a Blue Jays game.”
“The Northlander service will also have a sizeable impact on Huntsville’s local economy, and presents a huge opportunity to our business community, including greater worker mobility,” adds Councillor Stone. “This train will allow for those without a vehicle to visit Huntsville, and the connectivity to Toronto’s airports opens the doors for hosting more conferences and events in our community.”
