The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, presented by Country 102 and supporting the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka, was held on May 27, 2023, at Memorial Park in Bracebridge. Participants came out in droves to support individuals and families living in Muskoka and Parry Sound affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Featuring a combination of an in-person and a virtual option to accommodate all participants, making it accessible to anyone who wanted to contribute, this year’s event had a fundraising goal of $75,000 to support the growing number of those affected by dementia in Muskoka and Parry Sound, and exceeded their goal by raising $75,000 and counting.

More than just a fundraiser, the Walk for Alzheimer’s was a day of fun, fitness, and raising awareness for a world without dementia. Notable participants included the Bracebridge Town Crier, Bruce Kruger, who led the start of the Walk, Deputy Mayor of Bracebridge, Brenda Rhodes, and Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP, Graydon Smith, who attended to show their support for the cause.

The event took place at Memorial Park in Bracebridge and kicked off with a BBQ sponsored by the Lion’s Club of Bracebridge at 12:00 pm and pizza sponsored by Dominos Bracebridge, followed by the official Walk at 1:00 pm.

Interim Executive Director and First Link Care Navigator, Pamela Leeder, expressed her gratitude and said, “The outpouring of support from the community for the Walk for Alzheimer’s has been truly heartwarming. Every dollar raised goes towards helping families and individuals affected by dementia in Muskoka and Parry Sound, and we couldn’t do it without the dedication of our participants, volunteers, and sponsors.”

The funds raised will go a long way in supporting families and individuals affected by dementia in Muskoka and Parry Sound. Although the final tally of funds raised is still being counted, it’s clear that the event was a huge success, and the organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event.

Additionally, as a special recognition for reaching our $75,000 fundraising goal, Pamela Leeder will be dyeing her hair blue at Illusions by Wilma. This symbolic gesture represents her commitment to the cause and her appreciation for the overwhelming support received from the community. Pamela Leeder stated, “I am grateful for the generosity and dedication of our supporters. Dyeing my hair blue is a fun way to celebrate our achievements and raise further awareness about Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of families and individuals affected by dementia in Muskoka and Parry Sound.”
