Fowler Construction Company Limited Rosewarne Quarry has been awarded the 2022 Environmental Achievement Award from the Ontario Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (OSSGA).

The award acknowledges OSSGA members that have instituted and executed outstanding environmental policies, programs, or projects, demonstrating leadership within the industry.

The Rosewarne Quarry Power Project was launched with the goal of reducing emissions, saving costs, and minimizing noise at the Macaulay Township site. As part of the project, the quarry replaced a 1250-kW diesel generator with electricity supplied by Lakeland Power, leading to the reduction of 342,000 liters of diesel consumption and elimination of the need for diesel exhaust fluid, oil, and filters.

“Fowler Construction is proud to receive the Environmental Achievement Award for converting the power source of the Rosewarne Quarry Crushing Plant from Diesel Generator to Electricity,” says Riley Sewell, Materials Field EIT. “This is a major accomplishment in line with Fowler Construction’s mission.
That mission being our community can trust Fowler to improve our environmental sustainability, provide competitive costs for our customers, and ultimately provide a safe place to work.”

Fowler Construction also estimates a reduction of 1.39 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality for its neighboring communities in Muskoka. The electrification effort has also significantly reduced noise from the quarry and increased aggregate production.

“OSSGA promotes excellence among its members by encouraging them to efficiently run their operations, responsibly manage the land they work on, and actively participate in and contribute to
their communities,” says Norm Cheesman, Executive Director of OSSGA. “The 2022 Industry Recognition Award winners have surpassed OSSGA’s expectation in fulfilling those objectives.”
