After a two-year absence due to COVID, the Knights of Columbus were happy to welcome hockey players to the 8th Annual Dan McKeown Memorial Atom/Novice Hockey Tournament this past weekend.
Dan McKeown was a member of the Knights of Columbus who passed away a few years ago. McKeown was always involved in youth and family events both for the parish and the community at large. Minor hockey, especially with the age group in Atom and Novice, is all about the kids and their families, so it is fitting to have the tournament named in memory of McKeown, said Grand Knight Bill Weber.
This year’s event had 28 teams made up of Novice and Atom age kids (8 to 9 and 10 to 11) with both House League and Rep team divisions. The tournament usually includes a silent auction, but it was cancelled because of the uncertainty surrounding COVID protocols prior to the event.
“On behalf of our hockey committee, I would like to acknowledge and thank the many businesses, the Town of Huntsville and this year, for the first time, support from the Muskoka Accommodation Tax Fund,” Weber said. “We also wish to thank our members for their hard work in making this event possible. We would especially like to acknowledge all the players, coaches and parents for their dedication to our national winter sport.”
Weber also said the Huntsville Knights of Columbus are looking forward to hosting the tournament again next year and are hopeful about the return of the silent auction.
