Barb McCabe, a woman known for her strong community involvement, is the Town of Gravenhurst’s Ontario Senior of the Year.

Mayor Heidi Lorenz made the announcement at the Gravenhurst Opera House earlier today during the 40th annual Mayor’s Tea.

“On behalf of council and staff, I want to congratulate Barb on this well-deserved recognition,” Mayor Lorenz said. “We thank Barb for her significant contributions to our community. This award reflects her dedication, strong work ethic, and positive impact on Gravenhurst.”

Each year, local municipalities nominate an individual for the provincial award.

Recipients are people who have enriched the social, cultural, or civic life of a community.

The Town of Gravenhurst choses its nominee based on recommendations from the public. In April, after reviewing submissions, council settled on McCabe.

Peers put forward McCabe’s name due to her extensive volunteer work.

“Barb is a volunteer extraordinaire,” wrote one supporter. “She never stops and works tirelessly for our town and community through the Rotary Club of Gravenhurst. Barb is currently past-president and has held many leadership positions within the club. She has championed work on many of our main projects including Rotary Rocks the Barge.”

A member of the Rotary Club since 2000, McCabe is active in the organization in many ways, including serving on the Bingo Committee, as secretary on the Rotary Rocks the Barge Committee, and as chair of the Club Services Committee.

McCabe has also been a vital part of the Probus Club of Gravenhurst. She was a founding member of the local club in 2002 and later served a stint as president.

“Barb is not boastful or one to draw attention to all she does,” noted friends. “She works quietly in the background supporting everyone else.”
