Members of the Orillia OPP have laid charges in relation to a suspicious vehicle investigation in a north end Orillia neighbourhood. The Province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.
On May 29, 2022 at approximately 3:15 a.m., officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle with multiple occupants and a dog parked on Grace Avenue. Upon locating the vehicle and speaking with the occupants, police determined that two occupants had outstanding warrants. As officers attempted to arrest the occupants, an altercation ensued. An officer was subsequently attacked by the dog, receiving serious injuries. An officer discharged a firearm to stop the dog, which sustained fatal injuries. One vehicle occupant also sustained injuries during the incident.
As a result of the investigation, three people were arrested and charged.
A 35-year-old male from Orillia was changed with:
- Assault a Peace Officer – two counts
- Assault a Peace Officer – bodily harm
- Assault a Peace Officer – weapon
- Assault- intent to resist – two counts
- Escape Lawful Custody
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Possession of a schedule 1 substance – two counts
- Possession of a schedule 1 substance – trafficking – two counts
A 35-year-old female from Orillia was charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer – two counts
- Assault a Peace Officer – bodily harm
- Assault a Peace Officer – weapon
- Assault- intent to resist – two counts
- Escape Lawful Custody
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Possession of a schedule 1 substance – two counts
- Possession of a schedule 1 substance – trafficking – two counts
A 34-year-old female from Barrie was charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer
- Assault a Peace Officer
- Assault with intent to resist
- Assault with intent to resist
- Escape lawful custody
- Obstruct a Peace Officer
All accused were held for bail hearings. The OPP has notified the Province’s SIU, which has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information.
