Homeowner Burned While Extinguishing Garage Fire Sunday Afternoon

The Georgian Bay Fire Department responded to a garage fire at a water-access-only property in Lost Channel. Crews got the call on Sunday at 12:40 p.m. and responded with seven trucks, said Deputy Fire Chief Chad Dowell in an email to Muskoka411.

All emergency services used Big Chute Marina as a staging area before heading to the property.

The fire department was able to access this property using the fire department’s ATV on tracks, plus help from the local marine operator and his snowmobiles.

When crews arrived at the garage, the homeowner and neighbours had mainly extinguished the fire using their own pump and hoses. One homeowner received first-degree burns on his hands while extinguishing the fire but was not transported to hospital.

Fire crews cleaned up the hot spots at 5:30 p.m. and returned the residence to the homeowner.

The fire department said they are still estimating the value of the garage and the damages.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
