Youth Charged After Orillia Secondary School Put Into Lockdown On Wednesday

On May 8, 2024 at about 1:36 p.m. officers of the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a weapons call at Orillia Secondary School. Information was that a student may have had a firearm at the school.

At 1:38 p.m. officers began arriving on scene and entered the school. The school was placed into lockdown and surrounding schools placed in a hold and secure. Officers then began working with school staff taking steps to ensure the safety of everyone at the school. The investigation led police to a young person who had used a social media application to share a photo of what appeared to be a firearm. The young person was brought into police custody a short time later and the lockdown/hold and secure was lifted. It was determined the object in the photo was not a real firearm, rather a smaller detailed replica of a firearm.

A 16 year-old young person from Orillia has been charged with Mischief

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges at a later date in June 2024.
