The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public to remain alert following reports of distraction thefts occurring in communities across the region.

Distraction thefts involve suspects using deception and quick actions to steal valuables, most commonly jewelry, without the victim immediately realizing what has happened. These incidents often unfold in a matter of seconds and can occur in public spaces, parking lots, or even on private property.

While seniors are frequently targeted, anyone can become a victim.

How These Thefts Occur

Suspects commonly work together and rely on distraction, manipulation, and close physical proximity to carry out the theft. They may present themselves as friendly, helpful, or in distress to reduce suspicion.

In some cases:

A stranger may engage a person in conversation and then move into their personal space, sometimes attempting physical contact such as touching hands, wrists, or offering a hug. Victims often later discover jewelry has been removed.

Individuals may compliment jewelry and attempt to exchange it for what they claim is a more valuable item. The item provided is later found to have little or no value.

Suspects may offer gifts, such as necklaces, and place them on the victim while secretly removing genuine jewelry.

Some suspects claim to be in need of assistance or money and offer to sell or trade expensive-looking jewelry, which is ultimately counterfeit.

In certain incidents, suspects tell emotional stories, such as needing help for a family member, to pressure victims into handing over money or valuables.

These interactions are often designed to create confusion, urgency, or a sense of obligation.

Safety Tips

The OPP encourages residents to take the following precautions:

Stay aware of your surroundings, even during routine activities.

Be cautious when approached by strangers, particularly those entering your personal space.

Avoid accepting unsolicited gifts or offers involving jewelry.

Trust your instincts. If a situation feels uncomfortable, remove yourself immediately.

Keep valuables secure and limit how much jewelry you wear in public.

Consider carrying cash separately from your wallet or purse.

If you believe you are being targeted, attract attention by making noise and call 9-1-1.

Report Suspicious Activity

If you have been approached in a suspicious manner or believe you have been the victim of a distraction theft, report it to police immediately. Quick reporting can assist investigators and help prevent further incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also report fraud or attempted scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC): http://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca

An investigation into distraction thefts across Ontario has resulted in two individuals facing a total of 130 charges in relation to the thefts.

In the spring of 2025, the Ontario Province Police (OPP) Central Region Crime Unit identified a pattern of criminal activity that began in October 2024. The investigation, named Project Final, was led by the Nottawasaga Detachment Major Crime Unit and focused on multiple distraction thefts across Ontario.

The investigation revealed that the accused employed tactics such as “shoulder surfing” to observe victims entering their PINs at financial institutions. Once the PIN was obtained, the suspects would engage the victim in a verbal or physical distraction, during which the victim’s debit card was covertly swapped with a previously stolen card. This method allowed the suspects to delay detection and use the stolen card to withdraw funds or make purchases, often in the form of gift cards. The average age of victims was approximately 75 years old.

As a result of the investigation, Sasha Popisan Bravo, 24 of Bradford, has been charged with:

• Fraud under $5000 – 24 counts

• Property obtained by crime under $5000 – 24 counts

• Theft of credit card – 23 counts

• Unauthorized use of credit card – 24 counts

• Conspiracy to commit indictable offence – one count

Co-accused, Dylan Chancafe Bravo, 18 of Bradford, has been charged with:

• Fraud under $5000 – eight counts

• Property obtained by crime under $5000 – nine counts

• Theft of credit card – eight counts

• Unauthorized use of credit card – eight counts

• Conspiracy to commit indictable offence – one count

The accused are believed to be responsible for at least 23 identified occurrences involving distraction-style thefts targeting vulnerable individuals, primarily seniors..

The OPP continues to investigate and encourages anyone who may have been a victim of similar thefts to come forward by contacting the Nottawasaga OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference E250367401. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

Bell is sounding the alarm over a sharp rise in copper thefts across Eastern Canada, a growing crisis that is endangering public safety and disrupting essential communications infrastructure.

New Brunswick has emerged as one of the nation’s hotspots for copper thefts, with more than 80 incidents this year alone. The Fredericton–Oromocto corridor is particularly affected, with nearly 80% of the province’s thefts occurring in this area. Repeated incidents have occurred in communities such as Stanley, Hoyt, Fredericton Junction, and Keswick Ridge.

Copper theft related incidents have increased 23% year-over-year across Canada. Since 2022, Bell has recorded more than 2,270 copper thefts nationwide. Copper thefts now account for 88% of all physical security incidents on Bell’s network, with over 500 cases reported in the first half of 2025 alone. Ontario remains the hardest-hit province, representing 63% of all incidents, with hotspots including Hamilton, Cambridge, and Windsor. Quebec follows with 12% of cases, most concentrated in the Saguenay region.

“Copper theft is a serious crime that directly threatens the safety and well-being of Canadians. These thefts are not just about stolen copper; the perpetrators often damage other infrastructure such as fibre cable and the crime can potentially put lives at risk when people can’t call 911 as a result of the damage.”

— Mark McDonald, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at Bell Canada

Bell is taking decisive action to combat this growing threat:

Installing alarms that alert police to infrastructure tampering

Deploying additional security guards and surveillance cameras

Working closely with law enforcement and pursuing legal action against offenders

Accelerating the transition to an all-fibre network, which now covers 60% of Bell’s footprint

Bell is also urging provincial and federal governments to strengthen protections for critical infrastructure by increasing penalties and amending the Criminal Code. The company is calling on the Senate Transportation and Communications Committee to revive its study on theft within the telecommunications sector.

Bell encourages the public to report suspicious activity near telecom infrastructure – such as unmarked vehicles, individuals tampering with utility poles, or the sound of cutting or grinding metal – to local authorities immediately.

The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a break and enter with theft that occurred at a commercial property on Stewart Rd in the Town of Collingwood, over the past weekend.

The incident took place sometime between Saturday afternoon, April 26, 2025, and early Monday morning, April 28, 2025. Unknown suspects gained access to the property by cutting multiple holes in the chain-link fence at the back and side of the premises. A large hole was also cut in the fence, believed to have been used to allow a vehicle to enter the property for loading stolen goods. The suspects broke into a storage shed on-site and stole several hundred metres of heavy-duty copper wire intended for underground commercial use. The value of the stolen property is in excess of $20,000.

This marks the third such incident at this location since January 2025, raising concerns about targeted thefts in the area.

The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP is seeking assistance from the public. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity, has video footage from the area between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, or possesses information about this incident, is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip online at www.crimestopperssdm.com.

The investigation is ongoing, and the OPP reminds the public to report any suspicious activity around commercial properties to police immediately.

An unlocked vehicle entry followed by the unlawful use of credit cards has resulted in numerous charges after investigation for a Tay Township resident.

A member of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment responded to a call placed by the victim to the OPP Communication Centre reporting the unlawful use of credit cards from a wallet that disappeared during the overnight of December 27/28,2024 from a parked vehicle on Aberdeen Boulevard, Midland.

Victim reported being notified by financial institutions of unauthorized transactions in excess of $500 and through investigation, the officer was able to identify a suspect and made an arrest at approximately 10:54 a.m. December 29, 2024.

Charged in connection to this investigation is Martin Moore 34 years of Tay Township with the following criminal offences.

Use of Credit Card (two counts)

Fraud Under $5000

Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – in Canada (three counts)

Breach of Recognizance

The accused has been released to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on February 6, 2025.

Locking your vehicle does work and officers stress that you need to remove valuables such as wallets, purses and other valuable items and lock your vehicle to help prevent these crimes of opportunity from occurring in our community. It seems be a regular occurrence for officers to receive a report of a vehicle entry or a series of entries only to learn the vehicles were left unlocked or locked with valuables left out in plan sight causing an forced entry and theft. These types of thefts can lead to the loss of credit cards and other pieces of personal identification which can be used in fraud related occurrences.

The North Bay OPP is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying persons and a vehicle of interest involved in two theft incidents from the Powassan landfill.

The first occurrence, on December 1, 2024, two individuals unlawfully entered the Powassan landfill while it was closed. The individuals were captured on surveillance footage stealing various items, including donation bin contents and discarded electronics.

The second occurrence, on the evening of December 19, 2024, the chain on the landfill’s locked front gate was cut and the property entered using a vehicle. Surveillance footage recorded an image of their vehicle, which is believed to be an older style Chevrolet extended cab truck, hard flip-up tonneau cover, equipped with a back rack and rear-facing flood lights, and a partially burned-out left taillight.

Investigators believe these two incidents may be connected and are releasing images of the persons of interest and the vehicle of interest to assist in identifying those responsible.

If you recognize these individuals or this vehicle, or have any information relating to these cases, please contact the North Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS) or visit www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
