“Terry set out on his Marathon of Hope with a belief that Canadians would rally together to fund cancer research,” said Kirsten Fox, Terry’s eldest niece. “Forty-five years later, our family is still deeply moved and inspired to see millions of Canadians running and fundraising in his name.”

This year’s Terry Fox Run is a signature event in a year-long celebration marking the 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. To honour this milestone, the Terry Fox Foundation has launched several exciting initiatives, including a commemorative merchandise collection, the national Ride of Hope, the release of a new picture book T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage, a new documentary Run Terry Run, the reissue of the iconic Adidas Orion shoe Terry wore during his journey, and a special hike in Thunder Bay’s Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on the day Terry stopped running.
Earlier this year, the Terry Fox Foundation debuted a new short film called Finish It, featuring a reimagined version of “Courage” by The Tragically Hip. Today, the full version of the song is being released as a special, limited-edition and numbered vinyl. Music fans and supporters can pre-order “Courage (for Terry)” for $30 at shop.terryfox.org. All proceeds will support cancer research.

“Terry Fox continues to be a beacon of hope and unity for Canadians everywhere and we are deeply moved to be a part of this special project,” says The Tragically Hip. “The resilience we’ve seen from our loved ones impacted by cancer, especially our brother Gord, inspired us to get involved to help bring an end to cancer and help continue the work that Terry started 45 years ago.”

This year, a new app will give fundraisers more ways to reach their goal, allowing them to share a personal QR code, track their progress, share photos and stories, and inspire family and friends. Schools are invited to sign up for the School Run and encourage their student fundraisers to download the app at terryfoxschoolrun.org.

The Terry Fox Foundation is calling on all schools across Canada to participate in this year’s Terry Fox School Run to celebrate Terry’s legacy and fundraise for life-saving cancer research.

“Terry’s story continues to inspire Canadians everywhere to believe in something bigger than ourselves,” says Michael Mazza, Chief Executive Officer of the Terry Fox Foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and partners, the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute are leaders in advancing cancer research in Canada. Through initiatives like the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network, we are uniting the country’s brightest scientific minds to accelerate discoveries and bring hope to families facing cancer.”

Starting tomorrow, September 4, all participants and supporters can amplify their fundraising efforts with a matching gift opportunity. General donations and peer-to-peer fundraising will be generously matched by PharmaChoice Canada for twice the impact on cancer research, up to $100,000.

The Fellow in Yellow Trevor Redmond is passing through Muskoka this week as part of his cross-Canada run to promote health, mobility and recovery.

Redmond’s journey started in Halifax on March 26, and he plans to continue until he reaches Victoria, BC. He was inspired to create a “movement for movement” after getting hit by a car at age 15. He was lying in the hospital at risk of losing his leg, thinking of figures like Canadian athletes Terry Fox and Rick Hansen, when he made a promise to himself. If he kept his leg, he would run across Canada someday. After roughly 12 surgeries, he kept his leg, and now, he’s keeping his promise.

“I want to show all of Canada what a successful patient is,” Redmond said. “Now, the best way that I can show it myself is to get out there and show people what I have done on a leg I almost lost. I am up to over 31,000 kilometres between walking across Canada, biking across Canada, and now running across Canada.”

At age 53, Redmond said most people doing these “outrageous events” traversing Canada are about half his age, but he feels like he just keeps getting stronger. Looking back at the accomplishments of walking and biking across the country help remind him of what he’s capable of doing, though the commitment to running does make it the toughest trip yet.

Still, it exemplifies the point he’s trying to make that exercise is a critical part of health. Every time a person exercises, they’re asking their inner mechanics for an upgrade, he said, and he aims to upgrade continuously.

The conversations he has with the people along the way focus on his tenets of health, mobility and recovery, but each talk changes based on the people he meets. Different parts of his mission speak to different people, and he’s motivated to meet as many people as possible.

“I’m really pushing exercise that mind, exercise that body and exercise that spirit. It’s important for your health,” he said. “When all those are equally exercised, you’re a lot healthier for it.”

With the recent snowfall, Muskoka gave Redmond a lot to contend with. He stayed in Orillia for an extra two days due to the forecasts of additional snow, and the towering snowbanks required some special navigating once he made his way north. He said walking through the tunnels of ice surrounding the sidewalks felt like walking through the halls of the Death Star.

Redmond is always ready to keep moving, but he can’t say the same for his equipment. After about 5,400 kilometres, a bracket on one of his cart’s wheels broke. He shared his predicament online, and JSW Manufacturing in Bracebridge invited him in for repairs.

The cart is what allows him to carry two tents, a battery pack, a solar panel, a sleeping bag, a small foam mattress, food, water and more. He figures he needs to get a bigger cart or start pushing a tank across Canada, but for now, the cart will get him where he needs to go.

That said, he hasn’t used his tent since early December. He tented back in Innisfil during a freezing rain event, but since then, he’s stayed in a house, a hut, a garage, a motel and now a bed and breakfast.

“I’ve had very generous offers of people offering me a good place to pull in, but I do know there’s going to be points where I’m going to be in between and that might be next to impossible,” Redmond said. “I’ll prepare a tent, and I do have a propane heater, a sleeping bag that’s good to minus 30, and lots and lots of hand warmers.”

With -26 forecast for the weekend, he has to decide exactly how far to go. He won’t take any special risk to get here or there by a specific time, but just in case, he bought boots and mittens to add to his arsenal of warmth.

The intensity of his trip doesn’t allow for a lot of sightseeing, but Redmond has been blown away by the height of the snowdrifts in the region. It really struck him when he saw the amount that had collected on the giant yellow Muskoka chair in Gravenhurst. From afar, it looks like a regular lawn chair with snow, he said, chuckling at how small he looked in comparison.

“It’s see as you go, see as you move along,” he said. “What you see is what you get in this journey, because there’s really not a lot of time to explore like I would like to, but certainly taking those dips in and out of communities really is another exploration altogether of meeting people and communities you’ve never experienced before.”

Redmond said the best part of the trek is undoubtedly the people, which is why the hardest part is feeling like he isn’t reaching as many of them as he would like. He always says, “The more we move, the more we move others.” He wants to spread that message and give Canadians the best opportunity to be inspired by themselves and accomplish their goals.

For people with complex health challenges, those goals may look different. He knows what it’s like to lay in the hospital and have hopes of healing and moving forward. His hospital dream of keeping his leg came true, and he wants to help others reach and surpass their hospital dreams.

Just above Gravenhurst, Redmond crossed the same number of kilometres travelled by Terry Fox in his iconic Marathon of Hope. It’s emotional for him to be able to surpass that milestone in honour of one of his heroes. He identified so much with Fox’s story as a young man facing potential limb loss, so he plans to continue using the legs and the life he’s blessed to have to keep spreading a message of health and hope.

His other hero Rick Hansen, a track and field athlete and wheelchair user, wheeled across Canada as part of the Man in Motion World Tour, also inspired by Fox. He travelled a total of 40,075 kilometres, which is equal to the circumference of the Earth, so Redmond would love to reach that number someday.

He’s already gone more than 31,300 kilometres, so he’s well on his way to yet another personal triumph. It’s all been possible thanks to the various people and businesses that helped him on his travels, so he wants to extend his gratitude to every single one of them.

“I’m coming up on nine months on the road, and I could not at all have gotten this far without the support of people along the way,” Redmond said. “It just wouldn’t have happened, so that’s the most amazing thing.”

On Sunday, September 15, 2024, the village will mark 25 years of this annual tradition, with many expected to gather at the Windermere Community Centre to celebrate their milestone achievement.

This year’s run promises to be bigger than ever, with new surprises, a silent auction, live music and a BBQ lunch. Participants, young and old, along with pets, will either walk, run, or cycle through the scenic rural roads, embodying the same spirit of resilience and hope that defined Terry Fox’s iconic Marathon of Hope.

The Windermere Terry Fox Run was established in 2000 by Bev Longhurst after her daughter was diagnosed with cancer. What began as a humble event raising $2,016 in its first year has grown into one of the country’s most impressive per capita fundraising efforts. By 2023, the event had raised over $575,000 for cancer research. The funds raised each year continually contribute to life-saving research in the name of Terry Fox, whose Marathon of Hope in 1980 captured the hearts of millions across Canada.

Fox, who lost his right leg to osteosarcoma at the age of 18, set out to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Although his run was cut short after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres when cancer spread to his lungs, his legacy lives on through events like the Windermere run. Fox’s efforts have inspired millions globally, raising over $850 million for cancer research through annual Terry Fox Runs.

Linda Edwards, who has been volunteering with the event since 2001, noted that the success of the Windermere run is largely due to the unwavering support from local businesses and residents. “The sense of community here is overwhelming,” Edwards said. “Everyone pitches in, whether it’s volunteering, donating items for the silent auction, or simply showing up to walk or run. It’s inspiring to see how Terry’s dream continues to unite people.”

As the Windermere run gears up for its 25th anniversary, the message remains the same: keep Terry Fox’s dream alive and strive towards a world without cancer. As Bev Longhurst once said, “This run is about more than just raising money. It’s about remembering those we’ve lost and celebrating the survivors among us.”

Registration for the 2024 Windermere Terry Fox Run will begin at 8 a.m., with the run starting at 9 a.m. Participants can choose from various routes, from a 5 km to a 10 km loop, beginning and ending at the Windermere Community Centre. As they do each year, the residents of Windermere will lace up their sneakers, share stories, and continue Terry Fox’s legacy of hope, courage and community.

Thank you,

Randy Jackson

Written by a Windermere Terry Fox Run Volunteer

On Sunday, Sept. 18, we will be hosting the annual Terry Fox Run in Windermere… and it’s in person again. After two years of virtual events, we could not be more excited to have an in-person event this year. To see the community rally around a cause that impacts so many people will be heartwarming.

For me, The Terry Fox Run has been my way to show up and do something. Like so many others, I have had those that I love fight cancer. I am grateful to say that so many of those survived. My sister is an example of someone who was diagnosed with cancer as a teen and had to go through the fight all while going to university and starting her career. She, like Terry, found the strength to fight with everything she could. Now, I watch her, cancer free enjoying life with her incredible family and career.

I have also experienced loss to cancer, like so many others have. That loss continues to give me the determination and motivation to show up year after year. To not be afraid to fund-raise or ask for that silent auction item or reach out to friends to help volunteer, or simply just show up!

I grew up in the community of Windermere and although I live in Toronto now, I come up to be a part of this special event each year. It is incredible that the Windermere Terry Fox Run has almost raised $500,000 dollars in just over twenty years. My family has been a part of the committee since day one. My sister, mom and brother-in-law organized the first Windermere run and now, there is a full committee of participants who volunteer year after year to raise as many funds as we can to support The Terry Fox Foundation.

I encourage you on Sept. 18 to come to the Windermere Community Hall and join us! We will have a silent auction, a BBQ, live music and fun for all ages! You can sign up at www.terryfox.org to register or just show up on the day and donate. You can walk, run, or bike and bring your friends and family with you! Can’t wait to see you all there!

The Terry Fox Foundation has announced that, for the first time since 2019, the 42nd annual Terry Fox Run will be held in person on Sunday, September 18. The event will see Canadians from coast to coast to coast unite once again to support or participate, embodying Terry’s perseverance and ‘no quit’ attitude, raising critical funds for cancer research in Canada.

“Terry dreamed of a world without cancer – an illness that touches everyone’s lives in some capacity,” says Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother. “His legacy lives on through the passion and determination of Canadians who keep his dream alive by fundraising for cancer research without him here. We cannot quit.”

This year, approximately 4 million Canadians and nearly 600 communities are expected to participate in the Terry Fox Run in person either with their local community or at school. For the past few years, the Terry Fox Run has taken place virtually, with participants encouraged to complete their challenge independently due to COVID-19. Despite this challenge, the Terry Fox Foundation has prevailed in its efforts to raise critical funds for cancer research. To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $850 million dollars, bringing hope and health to millions of Canadians.

“The Terry Fox Foundation is built on the support of its community, which includes more than 20,000 steadfast volunteers across Canada,” says Michael Mazza, Executive Director of the Terry Fox Foundation. “Our volunteers have been instrumental in the success of the Terry Fox Foundation, especially in the last two years of uncertainty we all faced.”

The Terry Fox School Run will take place later in the week on September 23 with close to 10,000 schools participating. More than 3.5 million students of all ages participate in the Terry Fox School Run to fundraise for cancer research.

Canadians are encouraged to register, fundraise, and participate in this classic Canadian tradition in honour of a national icon who made a difference in the lives of millions of Canadians – then and today. All proceeds will fund innovative cancer research and there are no barriers or registration fees to join. Everyone is welcome and you can walk, run, blade or wheel in the Terry Fox Run.

Whether it’s a group ride, solo cycling journey, or ambitious biking adventure, the Ride of Hope is a collection of different bike ride experiences across Canada organized by volunteers who want to go the distance to make a difference, just like Terry!

Inspired by his brother and to mark the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, Darrell Fox and five close friends created a cycling challenge by riding 350km to Mount Terry Fox in northern BC. This challenge kick-started the idea of a Terry Fox Ride of Hope; now grown to include rides across Canada that continue Terry’s mission of funding cancer research in Canada.

“The Terry Fox Ride of Hope offers those who favour pedaling the opportunity to become a member of the Terry Fox legacy of reducing the cancer burden,” says Darrell Fox. “The various Terry Fox rides planned for this summer provide participants with a unique “moving” experience while bringing people together.”

From the trails of British Columbia to the coasts of Nova Scotia, this year there are eight unique rides taking place to date across Canada. In 2022, hundreds of Canadians will honour Terry’s determination by participating in the Ride of Hope, either in a group or on a solo fundraising adventure, collectively cycling over 6,000 km with the goal of raising over $300,000 for cancer research.

All funds raised will support the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI), which invests in groundbreaking scientific projects that help to advance discoveries and benefit cancer patients. TFRI leads innovative projects like the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network, which is focused on accelerating precision medicine, and funds pan-Canadian projects in brain, lung, pancreatic and hard-to-treat cancers, where better treatments and diagnostics are greatly needed.

“The Terry Fox Research Institute has played an instrumental role in Canada’s progress in cancer research for over four decades,” says Darrell Fox, who serves on the Board of Directors. “Significantly, the Government of British Columbia last month announced a new lung screening program, the first in Canada, for people at high risk. We are pleased to hear about developments like this that will help to save lives. This is an example of how dollars raised and invested in cancer research are making a difference. TFRI contributed funding for evidence-based work conducted by a pan-Canadian research team that found screening could help this at-risk population.”

The Terry Fox Foundation is looking to expand the Ride of Hope even further and engage avid cyclists throughout the country to lead their own challenge. To learn more, find a ride near you or sponsor a participant, please visit terryfox.org/rideofhope
