• Officers investigated 147 reported collisions with the highest frequency being on Wednesdays.
• Officers attended 55 complaint areas and issued 957 tickets and warned 41 drivers for their driving infractions.
• Officers conducted R.I.D.E. check stops at 22 various locations, checking 730 vehicles for signs of impairment.
• 15 Persons were charged with impaired driving after investigation with the greatest incidence of this offence occurring on Sundays.
• Four drivers were charged for a stunt driving offence – exceeding the posted speeds limits as follows with the introduction of the Moving Ontario More Safety Act, also known as the MOMS Act to increase road safety.

The first change is an increase in the previous seven-day vehicle impoundment period to 14 days.

The second change is the introduction of a lower speed threshold for street racing offenders on municipal roads. On roads with a posted speed limit of less than 80 km/h, drivers caught traveling 40 km/h over the speed limit face racing/stunt driving charges (the previous limit was 50 km/h over the speed limit).

On Thursday, May 12 just before 8 p.m., a Bracebridge OPP officer was conducting speed enforcement on Ecclestone Drive in Bracebridge when he stopped a vehicle travelling more the 50 km/hr in excess of the posted limit. After a conversation with the driver and subsequent investigation, police arrested and charged 34-year-old David Farris of London, ON with Operation While Impaired, Over 80 and Stunt driving.

Farris will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on June 7 to answer to his charges. Furthermore, his driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded.

On July 1, 2021 two changes to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) take effect for racing/stunt driving [HTA Sec. 172 (1)].

The changes form part of the Moving Ontarians More Safely (MOMS) Act, which received royal assent on June 3, 2021.

The OPP remains committed to saving lives on roads, waterways and trails.

The OPP says they support any legislation that makes our roads safer.

Aggressive driving is dangerous and is a leading causal factor in fatal motor vehicle collisions on OPP-patrolled roads.

Racing, stunt driving, speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes and road rage are all forms of aggressive driving that place drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians at risk.

Street racing is one of the most dangerous, aggressive driving behaviours on our roads.

The OPP targets speeders, racers/stunt drivers and other aggressive drivers through robust enforcement and public education.
