November is also when 2pm matinees are added for regular Reel Alternatives screenings in addition to the 7pm evening shows. The matinees will continue through early March. This is to offer an alternative for seniors or other audience members who want to avoid driving at night throughout the winter. And, based on a recent audience survey, closed captions (subtitles) will be now featured on all movies including those in English (when possible) — so there will be no more missed dialogue due to accents or mumbling.

First up on Monday, November 9th is Dancing On The Elephant starring two of Canada’s most beloved actors, Sheila McCarthy and Mary Walsh. In this tender, funny film, two retirement home residentsdiscover they aren’t ready to give up on life yet. According to a Rotten Tomatoes review, the “film is an ode to the fires that continue to burn inside us even as we age, and to the connections and friendships that sustain us through the good times and the bad. It’s a cinematic slice of Canadian life worth seeking out.” Dancing on the Elephants is sponsored by Muskoka Landing Retirement Lodge.

Then, the stylistic pendulum swings to the other end of the spectrum with the zany Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie on Monday, November 23rd
. (Heads up, it has nothing to do with the famous grunge band of the ‘90s.) Winner of the TIFF People’s Choice Award, Midnight Madness, TIFF (2025) and based on the cult comedy web series, this riotously funny film stars Matt Johnson (Blackberry) and Jay McCaroll as two hapless musicians chasing a long-elusive gig at Toronto’s storied Rivoli nightclub – and
who end up time-travelling back to 2008 in the process. This film is sponsored by Up North Games.

The month closes out with In The Mood For Love, the next installment of Reel Alternatives’ special vintage film series “Filmmaker Favourites,” hosted by filmmaker Geordie Sabbagh. This international masterpiece from 2000 screens on November 30th at 7pm only (no matinee). Set in Hong Kong in the ‘60s, Sabbagh describes this simmering meditation on love, memory and missed opportunities as “one of the greatest films of the 21st century. Few films have influenced the look and feeling of modern cinema quite like this one.” This series is sponsored by Hear Well, Be Well.

Reel Alternatives would also like to invite ticket holders to make a whole night of it with ‘Dinner and a Movie’ discounts on film nights at participating downtown restaurants: Main Street Local Kitchen, The Mill on Main and Little Place By The Lights. See the Reel Alternatives website for full details.

Tickets for all films are now available for $10 online at reelalternativeshuntsville.ca or
algonquintheatre.ca, at the door or by calling the Algonquin Theatre box office at 705-789-4975. Reel Alternatives Huntsville is a non-profit group affiliated with the Toronto International Film Festival’s Film Circuit and is now enjoying their 28th season of bringing fine films to the Huntsville community.
