The couple said they’ve been playing the lottery together for about six years. After dropping their daughters off at camp, they remembered to check their tickets using the OLG app.

Officers of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) spoke with the driver and quickly entered into an impaired driving investigation which was continued at the Detachment.

Upon completion of the investigation, 35 year old Christopher Short has been charged with the following criminal driving offences of –

• Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
• Failure or refusal to comply with demand

And further with the following Provincial Offences

• Fail to surrender insurance card
• Driver fail to surrender licence
• Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice  on August 7, 2025, and was also served a 90 day drivers licence suspension. The involved vehicle was towed and subject to a 7 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Officers responded at approximately 9:18 p.m. November 6, 2024 to the complaint involving a motorcycle in the Grandview Road area of Port McNicoll. A short time later, a loud motorcycle matching the description was observed by an officer from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while it was southbound on William Street, Midland. The motorcycle appeared to be visually travelling above the posted speed limit and the officer took a position follow the motorcycle at a safe distance while observing a number of driving infractions as it travelling east on Highway 12 into Tay Township.

The officer was able to safely stop the motorcycle near Triple Bay Road, Tay Township and after speaking with the lone occupant and conducting a check on the Canadian Police Information Centre (C.P.I.C) the driver was placed under arrest and after a further investigation was completed, Benjamin Joshua TALBOT 34 years of Tay Township has been charged with the following offences.

• Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court
• Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code

And further with the following Provincial Offences Violation

• Red light – fail to stop
• Unnecessary noise
• Drive motor vehicle – improper licence
• Improper muffler – motor vehicle
• Drive motor vehicle, no plates
• Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
• Driving while under suspension
• Drive wrong way – divided highway
• Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

The accused is being held for a bail hearing and remains in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date. The involved motorcycle was towed and is the subject of a 45 day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Officers at the R.I.D.E. program set up between Wye Valley Road and Franke Kindred Road observed a white Honda while on it’s approach turnoff onto Wye Valley Road at approximately 11:19 p.m. October 7, 2024. An officer immediately located and stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver and entered into an impaired driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation, Melody Faith Gauthier 23 years of Midland has been charged criminally with the following driving offence.

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

A few minutes later at approximately 11:22 p.m. R.I.D.E. program officers arrested the driver of a Ford Edge. While conducting the at scene part of the impaired driving investigation, an open bottle of liquor was seized from the interior of the vehicle.

As a result, William Stanley 64 years of Port McNicoll has been charged criminally with the following driving offences.

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
• Driving Motor Vehicle With Liquor Readily Available contrary to the Liquor Licence and Control Act

The accused persons were released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on October 24, 2024 and was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension along with a 7-day vehicle impound in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Marine officers on patrol checked a bow rider vessel with five occupants just off Whiskey Island in Penetang Bay at approximately 2:09 p.m. September 14, 2024 and upon speaking with the operator an impaired operation investigation was commenced along with a Liquor Licence and Control Act (LLCA) investigation.

The operator was taken ashore to detachment for further investigation and as a result of this investigation if was found that the 62 year old male of Midland registered three times the legal limit of alcohol allowed by law.

The accused was charged with

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
• Having open liquor aboard a vessel (two counts)
• Fail to register a vessel upon becoming the owner

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on September 26, 2024 and was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Back on our roadways, officers responded to a traffic complaint by a community member to the OPP Communication Centre  reporting a possible impaired driver who has interacted with numerous vehicles and an ambulance while travelling eastbound on Highway 12, Tay Township near 4:54 p.m. September 13, 2024.

Dispatched officers were directed to a Assiniboia Street, Port McNicoll address and spoke to the driver of the suspect vehicle and entered into an impaired driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation, Nathan Kosynski 33 years of Port McNicoll has been charged criminally with the following offences.

• Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
• Operation while impaired – blood drug concentration
• Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on September 26, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Officers stopped an east bound blue Chevrolet pick up truck on Highway 12 near Wye Valley Road, Midland near 2:06 a.m. September 10, 2024, as officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. program at that location. An officer spoke with the driver at which time an impaired by drug investigation was commenced along with a seizure of a quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine was made..

A further investigation at Detachment was conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer.

The investigation has resulted in the following criminal code driving charge for Christine Calvert 53 years of Port McNicoll.

• Operation while impaired – drug
• Possession of Schedule I substance – cocaine

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on September 24, 2024, was served a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.
