On December 10, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Deer Lake Road, Perry Township for a suspected impaired driver. Police located the subject vehicle off the roadway, in a ditch.

Through investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing.

Maurice Kmyta, 75 years-of-age, of Barrie was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
• Operation while impaired – alcohol
• Fail to comply with probation order – two counts
• Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor
• Disobey stop sign

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on January 9th, 2025, in Sundridge. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers License Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On October 26, 2024, at approximately 11:25 p.m., the Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a single vehicle collision on Boundary Road, Perry Township.

Through investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing.

Isaac Fitz, 21 years-of-age of North Bay was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
• Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
• Careless driving

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 14, 2024, in Sundridge.

The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On August 1, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., officers conducting enforcement on Highway 11 in Perry Township stopped a vehicle for speeding. Upon further investigation, the two occupants of the vehicle were arrested. A search of the vehicle led to a seizure of approximately $66,000 worth of illicit drugs.

Shane Moreau, age 34, of Callander and Derrick STONE, age 35, of Powassan, were charged with the following offences:

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000.00
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- cocaine
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- fentanyl
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- oxycodone
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- hydromorphone
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- morphine
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- hydromorphcontin
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- hydromorphone 4mg/1mg
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- methamphetamine

In addition, the driver of the vehicle, Moreau, was charged with nine offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Both parties were held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound.

On January 22, 2024, shortly after 3:15 p.m., members of the Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a suspicious person call on Silver Birch Line in the Township of Perry.

The investigation revealed the person had left on foot, however, was located a short time later at a nearby residence.  

As a result, Alexander Nunn, 31 years-of-age, of Victoria Harbour, was charged with:

·        Break, enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence

·        Possession of a scheduled I substance – cocaine

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday February 22, 2024, in Sundridge.

On January 22, 2024, shortly after 3:15 p.m., members of the Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to a dispute in the Township of Perry.

As a result of the investigation, a 40-year-old person from Perry Township, was charged with:

·        Unauthorized possession of a firearm – eight counts

·        Carless storage of a firearm, prohibited device or ammunition – two counts

·        Explosives – making or possession for unlawful purpose

The accused is being held pending a bail hearing.

Due to the domestic nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

Most recently on October 11, 2023, members of the Almaguin Highlands OPP, responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a dirt bike on Whitney Road in the Township of Perry. The youth was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation the youth was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

• Drive motor vehicle – no plates
• Drive motor vehicle – no license

The OPP would like to remind riders to stay safe and be mindful of the laws in place.

Dirt Bikes:

• A two wheeled dirt bike is classified as an Off-Road Motorcycle (ORM) and these are NOT permitted on Schedule B highways – ie. City streets, Highway 108, Highway 17 – Anything that the municipality or Ministry Transportation Ontario (MTO) maintains.
• Dirt bikes are supposed to be walked to a trail head entry.
• They are to be green plated unless operation is on a closed racetrack or one’s own private property.
• Dirt bikes can be operated on trails and Schedule C highways – dirt roads in unorganized townships that are not under the jurisdiction of the MTO or a municipality.
• There are no lights (headlight, signal, brake light), tires are designed for dirt, insurance may not be required, and class M license not required. These are strictly for off road use only.
• Two-wheeled dirt bikes are still prohibited from Schedule A (multi-lane like 400 series) and Schedule B highways.

A 42-year-old person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A 5-year-old person was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later succumb to their injuries.

A 9-year-old person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not release any names at this time.

Members of the OPP Crime Unit and OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team (T.I.M.E.) is assisting with the investigation.  

Currently the investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCCO-OFPS).

• Possession of schedule II substances for the purpose of Trafficking (two counts)
• Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution of obstruct justice (identity Fraud)
• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 – in Canada (two counts)

The accused will appear in Bail Court on Sunday April 2, 2023.
