Last year, the Muskoka Animal Centre found loving homes for 405 animals. To date in 2025, it has already had more than 630 animals come into its care. The animal centre’s goal is to find loving homes for 44 animals during the Home for the Holidays campaign. Animals adopted from the Ontario SPCA are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated, and they go home with food from Royal Canin to help ensure a smooth transition into their new life.

With more people home during the holidays, now is an ideal time to welcome an animal into your family. Whether it’s an affectionate cat who’s been patiently watching others go home or a gentle senior dog still full of love to give, each adoption helps change a life – both for the animal and the family who opens their heart.

“Every animal deserves to experience the joy of home,” says Lindsey Bunn, Manager, Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. “We have some very special animals who have been patiently waiting for a loving family to call their own and we’re hoping this holiday season will be their time to finally make their wishes come true.”

Those unable to adopt can still make a difference this holiday season. Donations help provide shelter and medical care for animals waiting for their forever homes. Supporters can also shop Paws & Give™, the Ontario SPCA’s online giving store filled with gifts that give back – from gifts for that special someone on your list, to toys for shelter animals. Every purchase helps give animals in need a second chance.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a furry family member, now is the perfect time to open your heart and home to an animal in need. Adoption fees will be reduced by 20% for long-term residents, which are animals who have been waiting for more than three times longer than the average wait time to find a loving home.

“Springtime brings a wave of new animals into our centres,” Lindsey Bunn, Manager, Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. “By opening your heart and home this weekend, you’re giving a homeless animal a fresh start and helping us make room for the next ones who urgently need care.”

There are so many great reasons to consider adoption! Not only are you giving an animal a second chance, but animals adopted from the Ontario SPCA are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and go home with food from Royal Canin to help ensure a smooth transition into their new home.

If you’ve been thinking of welcoming an animal into your life, please consider adopting. To date, 393 animals have been adopted this year from the Muskoka Animal Centre. For many people, the holidays are the perfect time for an animal to join their family. With more time spent at home during the holidays, it’s an ideal opportunity to help animals adjust to their new surroundings with extra care and attention.

Animals adopted from the Ontario SPCA are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and they go home with food from Royal Canin to ensure a smooth transition. Visit ontariospca.ca/adopt to view the many deserving animals who have so much love to give.

Even if you can’t adopt right now, you can help make the season brighter for animals in need by donating to support their care. As a registered charity that does not receive annual government funding, the Ontario SPCA depends on the generosity of donors to change the lives of animals. Every gift, big or small, helps provide shelter and care to animals waiting for their forever families. Visit ontariospca.ca/donate to donate.

“We’re so close to reaching our adoption goal, and we need your help to make it happen,” says Lindsey Bunn, Manager, Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. “If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the time to make the season extra special for an animal in need. Let’s make their holiday dreams come true.”

From Friday, Sept. 13 to Sunday, Sept. 15, the Ontario SPCA will be reducing adoption fees by 20 per cent at its 12 animal centres across the province. The reduced adoption fees apply to the more than 200 adoptable animals across the province, but the goal is to find loving homes for the more than 70 animals who have been in the care of the Ontario SPCA for longer than 30 days. The longest-stay animal in the care of the Muskoka Animal Centre is Curly, a mixed-breed dog who is seven years old and has been waiting for over 40 days for a family to see what a loveable teddy bear he is.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of animals coming into our care, and many of them are staying with us longer before getting adopted,” says Sonya Reichel, Vice President of Operations, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “We want to find loving homes for as many furry friends as possible during this adoption event so we can help even more animals.”

The Ontario SPCA offers free AnimalSmart™ presentations for Grades 1-8 in its animal centre communities, with the goal to foster empathy, promote responsibility and inspire a connection with animals. A new theme is launching this fall – Animals in the Community – and more volunteers are needed.

“Hearing the students’ enthusiasm when they talk about their pets, seeing their faces when they realize that animals have emotions too, and listening to how they can be caring to animals is very fulfilling to me,” says AnimalSmart volunteer Cory Philip, who has presented to 17 classes, reaching over 325 students. “It gives me hope when young children talk about being kind to animals as an extension of being kind to each other.”

As a registered charity, the Ontario SPCA depends on the support of volunteers to make programs like AnimalSmart™ possible. Volunteers don’t need to be teachers or have a background in education; they will receive one-on-one coaching, as well as in-classroom mentoring with an experienced educator.

“We want to create a brighter future for animals, which is why it’s so important to show kids how special animals are and how to treat animals with respect and kindness,” says Nina Alexander, Humane Education Manager, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “The Ontario SPCA’s AnimalSmart™ program is a fun and engaging way to get kids thinking about animals and what they need to be happy and healthy.”

Bunn recently joined the team at the animal centre in Bracebridge and brings many years of management and customer care experience. She was born and raised in Muskoka and enjoys spending time enjoying the beautiful outdoors with her family.

“I am very excited to be here to help our wonderful animals find their forever homes,” says Bunn. “Getting to know the community and matching people with the animals in our care is something I am very passionate about. You will never find a love like the bond you have with a special animal.”

Over the past 10 years, the Muskoka Animal Centre has found loving homes for over 2,300 animals. Bunn’s goal is help 600 animals get adopted this year.
