Nothing says summer like a sizzling steak on the grill.

But many backyard barbecues are falling short of steakhouse-quality results. While premium equipment can elevate the experience, technique remains the most important factor in achieving consistent results – often making the difference between a juicy, flavourful steak and one that misses the mark on texture and doneness.

“Steaks are an expensive cut of meat, so it’s worth taking a few extra steps to get them right on the grill,” says Garry Scott, Vice President of Marketing at Napoleon. “The good news is that small adjustments in timing and technique can make a noticeable difference in the final result.”

With June recognized as National Steak Month and the unofficial kickoff to the summer grill season, Napoleon is highlighting four common steak-grilling mistakes – and how small adjustments that can help improve results.

Grilling Steak Straight from Fridge: One of the most common mistakes is grilling steak straight from the fridge. Cooking a cold steak often leads to uneven results, with an overcooked exterior and undercooked centre. Letting the steak rest at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling helps it cook more evenly. Some home cooks also rely on internal temperature tools – such as digital thermometers – to help gauge doneness more precisely.

Seasoning Too Late: Seasoning just before the steak hits the grill doesn’t allow enough time for flavour to develop or for a proper crust to form. Seasoning at least 30-40 minutes ahead of cooking is generally recommended. Clean grill grates also play an important role in achieving a good sear, since residue can interfere with surface contact and heat translation. Tools like grill brushes, including Palmyra-bristle options, are commonly used to help maintain cooking surfaces.

Flipping the Steak Too Often: Frequent turning prevents a proper sear from forming and interrupts crust development. Allowing each side to cook undisturbed for a few minutes helps build that exterior texture many home cooks are aiming for. In most cases, steaks should only be flipped once – using tongs or a spatula, and consistent heat distribution on the grill can also make this process easier to manage.

Cutting Into the Steak Too Soon: Cutting into the steak too soon can lead to juices escaping before they’ve had a chance to redistribute. Resting the steak for 5–10 minutes after cooking helps maintaintenderness and moisture. Temperature monitoring tools can help cooks pull the steak at the right moment, reducing the need to check doneness by cutting into it early.

“The difference between a good steak and a great one often comes down to a few simple habits,” says Scott. “Mastering those basics can completely elevate your steak from good to great.”

Napoleon offers a range of barbeques for every grilling skill level. From beginner to pro, there are a variety of options and grilling tools to help cook the most tender meat and mouthwatering dishes.

With Ontario residents and visitors taking to highways and roads for the Canada Day week, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is counting on all road users to help ensure everyone makes it to and from their destinations safely.

This year, 164 people have died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads. The top four factors in roadway fatalities continue to be speeding, impairment through alcohol and drugs, distracted driving and failure to wear a seatbelt.

The public can expect to see an increased OPP presence across the province, with officers actively targeting dangerous driving behaviours during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

Whether you are a driver or a passenger, you can play a role as a road safety partner. If you spot dangerous driving or suspect a driver may be impaired, call 9-1-1 immediately. One call can make a difference – and could save a life.

Beyond our roadways, the OPP is also counting on boaters, paddlers and off-roaders to make safety a priority. Accidents can happen at any moment, but wearing the right gear, like a lifejacket or helmet, can reduce the risk of serious injury and help ensure you make it home to see another adventure.

The OPP is committed to keeping people safe on close to 100,000 kilometres of waterways and trails, and more than 130,000 kilometres of roadway.

Together, let’s make safety a top priority and prevent avoidable tragedies this Canada Day week.

An individual from Southern Ontario has been fined $2,500 for the following hunting violations against migratory birds:

Liam Comerford of Killaloe pleaded guilty to hunting migratory birds from a moving motorboat, contrary to the Migratory Birds Regulations. Comerford was fined $2,500 and is prohibited from applying for a migratory game bird hunting permit for three years.

The Ontario Court of Justice heard that on September 28, 2025, conservation officers were conducting a patrol near Cole’s Creek off Golden Lake. A hunter was observed shooting at ducks from a moving motorboat while collecting decoys. The conservation officers later observed hunters proceeding upstream on Cole’s Creek and multiple shots being fired at ducks flying overhead while the boat was being driven. Upon arrival back at the launch, the officers’ investigation revealed that Comerford had been shooting from the motorboat while it was being driven by another hunter.

Justice of the Peace Jennifer L. Grant heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on April 20, 2026.

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, at approximately 11:20 a.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to multiple complaints of a pickup truck driving erratically in the area of Highway 12 and Reeves Road.

Callers reported the vehicle was leaving the roadway, had struck a sign, and eventually came to a stop on a nearby private laneway. Officers arrived in the area shortly after and located the suspect vehicle parked at a residence.

Through the investigation, officers identified the driver and observed signs of impairment. The individual was arrested and transported to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment for further testing, where it was determined the driver had consumed alcohol in excess of the legal limit.

As a result of the investigation, Gary Sweet 61 years, of Tay Township, has been charged with:

• Operation While Impaired

• Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on August 6, 2026. All drivers charged with impaired operation receive a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the vehicle being operated is impounded for seven days.

The OPP reminds motorists that impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death on Ontario roads. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is encouraged to call 911.

Summer has officially started and the weather will be warming up. To help residents prepare for extreme heat events, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reminds residents to watch for signs of heat-illness and take steps to stay cool and healthy.

Extreme heat can cause serious, life-threatening health problems. To stay safe, go to cool places such as air-conditioned spaces, shaded areas or public buildings like libraries and malls. Take breaks from the heat, drink water often, even if you are not thirsty, and limit alcohol and caffeine.

Avoid strenuous activity and plan outdoor tasks for cooler times of the day. Keep your home cool by closing blinds during the day and opening windows at night if it is cooler outside. Use air conditioning if available and do not rely on fans alone to cool down.

Wear light, loose clothing and protect yourself from the sun with a hat and sunglasses. Check on family, friends and neighbours, especially those at higher risk. If you live alone or need extra support, arrange for someone to check on you regularly.

While anyone can be affected, people at greater risk include infants and young children, older adults and those with chronic health conditions. People who live alone, do not have access to cool indoor spaces, or who work or exercise in the heat are also more vulnerable.

Heat can make you sick quickly. It can cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It can also worsen existing health conditions, such as lung and heart problems, and may affect mental health, causing changes in mood or behaviour.

Watch for early warning signs of heat illness, including headache, nausea, irritability, weakness, fatigue, light-headedness or dizziness. Some people may become disoriented or confused.

Other signs include extreme thirst, peeing less than usual or having dark yellow pee, skin rash, muscle cramps or very warm, sweaty skin, as well as a faster heart rate or a body temperature of about 38 C.

The Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North is
pleased to announce the appointment of Meghan Taylor as the organization’s new Chief
Executive Officer.

Most recently serving as Senior Director, Operations, Taylor brings more than 12 years of
progressive leadership experience at Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North, spanning operations, finance, and communications, coupled with a deep commitment to community impact and organizational excellence. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation as a collaborative leader who combines strategic thinking with a strong focus on people, performance, and organizational growth.

As CEO, Taylor will guide Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North in its mission to bring communities together to help families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable housing and equity-building programs. She will lead the organization’s efforts to expand housing opportunities, including the landmark 21-unit Generation Homes housing project in Bracebridge, in collaboration with Greystone Project Management Inc. and the District Municipality of Muskoka.

“Meghan is an inspiring and values-driven leader whose experience, vision, and commitment to community align deeply with Habitat’s mission,” said Ken Lung, chairman of the Board of Directors. “As the need for affordable housing continues to grow across our region, we are excited to welcome Meghan in her new role and look forward to the leadership she will bring as we continue building homes, communities, and hope.”

Taylor steps into the role of CEO at a time of significant opportunity and momentum. With
affordable housing challenges affecting communities across the province, Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North continues to expand its impact through affordable homeownership, rental housing initiatives, ReStore operations, and community partnerships.

“It’s a privilege to take on this role and continue the important work of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North,” said Taylor. “Every day, I see the difference safe and affordable housing makes in the lives of individuals and families. Housing provides a foundation for stability, opportunity, and a sense of belonging. I look forward to working alongside the talented staff, volunteers, donors, partners, and supporters who make Habitat’s work possible as we build on our legacy and expand our impact across the communities we serve.”

The Board of Directors extends its gratitude to everyone who contributed to the leadership
transition process and offers its heartfelt thanks to outgoing CEO Kimberley Woodcock, whose commitment and contributions have helped shape the organization and advance its mission.

Taylor has assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective June 17, 2026

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police lay impaired charges after traffic complaint of a commercial motor vehicle driving in dangerous manner.

On June 23, 2026, the West Parry Sound Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint on Highway 400 regarding a southbound commercial motor vehicle swerving within its lane, striking the shoulder, crossing the centre line, and nearly causing collisions with other motorists.

Police located and stopped the vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of impairment. A Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) was completed with the driver, who was arrested for impaired operation as a result.

Manpreet Singh, a 27-year-old of Brantford, has been charged with:

· Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

· Dangerous operation

· Window obstructed

· Fail to surrender insurance card

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on August 20, 2026. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

If you suspect a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 9-1-1 immediately. Try to provide the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, licence plate number, and a description of the vehicle.

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths on Ontario roads. Your call could prevent a serious collision and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

To meet the growing needs of the South Georgian Bay region, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) has expanded its mammography program, increasing capacity and improving access to both diagnostic and breast‑screening services.

“The hospital has replaced its 12‑year‑old mammography machine and added a second, fully equipped mammography suite. Together, these upgrades double CGMH’s mammography capacity and introduce advanced diagnostic capabilities that extend well beyond traditional screening,” says Michael Lacroix, CGMH President and CEO. The second suite will focus on in‑depth assessments and will offer contrast‑enhanced mammography – an important tool for improved cancer detection, particularly in patients with dense breast tissue.

With this addition, CGMH will be among a select group of hospitals in Ontario offering contrast‑enhanced mammography, expected to be fully implemented by Fall 2026.

Key enhancements for patients and the community include:

3D‑guided (stereotactic) biopsies for greater precision in targeting abnormalities

Contrast‑enhanced mammography to highlight potential cancers by tracking contrast dye within breast tissue (beginning Fall 2026)

These advancements are especially valuable for identifying cancers that may be hidden within dense breast tissue and not visible on ultrasound. At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful goal: to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, supporting less invasive surgery and more effective treatment options.

“The expansion also allows one mammography unit to focus primarily on screening mammograms, helping reduce the growing waitlist and increasing access to breast‑screening services through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP). In the past fiscal year alone, CGMH performed 7,645 mammograms, including 5,670 for OBSP patients,” says Jamey Gilroy, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging and Echocardiography.

CGMH extends its sincere thanks to the generous leadership of the late Teri Yamada and her husband Doug Moxon, who matched donations up to $375,000 through the 2024 Tree of Life campaign. Additional thanks go to 100+ Women Who Care, South Georgian Triangle, for their $25,500 contribution, and to every community member whose support helped bring this innovative technology to our hospital.

“This milestone reflects what is possible when our community comes together to invest in better health care today and into the future, as we work to bring Tomorrow’s Hospital for South Georgian Bay to fruition,” says Sandra Taylor, CGMH Foundation President and CEO.
