“National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to expand our knowledge so as to better understand, appreciate and celebrate the strength, diversity and culture of Indigenous peoples in Canada and in our own community,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Our area was shaped by First Nations people whose presence endures in our residents’ and our neighbours’ stories. On behalf of staff and Council, I am honoured to welcome Chief Ted Williams of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Coun. Jane Copegog of Beausoleil First Nation and students of the Mnjikaning Kendaaswin Elementary School on June 6 to learn from and experience some of their teachings.”

National Indigenous History Month invites Canadians to delve deeper into the stories, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in our community and across our nation. Locally, the Mnjikaning Fish Weirs is one of the oldest man-made structures in the world and a sacred gathering place for First Nations peoples for thousands of years.

The City of Orillia is working alongside various partners to continue the conversation beyond National Indigenous History Month. This includes participation in roundtable discussions facilitated by Senator Gwen Boniface that include local Elders, youth leaders, teachers and community members working towards truth and reconciliation.

A virtual learning library comprised of local stories and Indigenous teachings has been developed as a resource. Residents are encouraged to visit the site often as its resources grow with our collective knowledge, through further education and collaboration from the community. Residents can access the library and other teachings at orillia.ca/indigenousinitiatives.
