Writers, this is your moment. Registration is now open for the 2026 Muskoka Novel Marathon, a one-of-a-kind creative challenge that pushes you to write a novel in just 72 hours – while helping raise funds for adult literacy.

By signing up for the marathon, happening Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19,
2026, at the Port Sydney Community Hall and online via Zoom, you will also help
celebrate the nonprofit event’s 25th anniversary.

“This year marks an entire quarter century of toiling over our keyboards for 72 hot
summer hours, annually, and raising tens of thousands of dollars to fund literacy,
numeracy, computer skills, English as a Second Language, and more, in Muskoka,”
says KM Wehrstein, a novel marathon alumnus and convenor for the milestone
event. “The emotional and creative payoff is something that has been described so
well by so many writers – for many it has been life-changing. Literary careers –
including one for an international best-selling author – have been started here. Why
is this year the perfect time for you to jump in? Because it’s this year. The time to
start is now.”

The Muskoka Novel Marathon brings together both new and experienced writers for
an intense and exciting weekend. Participants write around the clock, building
momentum, breaking through self-doubt, and producing a substantial piece of work
in just three days – all in a supportive, creative, and focused environment.

Writers can register to participate in person ($100) or virtually ($25), but space is
limited. Only 40 in-person spots are available – and they fill quickly. Early registration
helps ensure your seat – literally – as a new online seat selection option is now
available. In-person registration includes meals, coffee, tea, and Muskoka-sourced
spring water. Special 25th anniversary T-shirts and tumblers are available for
participants to purchase as keepsakes.

Participants can compete in two categories: Best Novel and, now in its second year,
Best Spanish Language Novel. Writers can work solo or in pairs and may bring a
one-page outline to guide their story. While submitting a manuscript at the end for
judging is optional, participants are encouraged to take the leap.
A panel of judges – such as editors, librarians, and professional writers – will review
submissions, offering feedback. The grand prize? The winning manuscript is sent
directly to a publisher or literary agent for review.

Beyond writing and prizes, though, the marathon has a fundamental purpose: to
support writers in helping readers. Funds raised through registration fees – and
pledges collected by participants – will support YMCA Simcoe Muskoka’s adult
literacy supports and services in Huntsville and area. Participants will have access to
fundraising tools, templates, and donor incentives. Top fundraisers can earn prizes –
including guaranteed entry into the 2027 marathon.

“Literacy is directly tied to employment and income. It also impacts health,
independence and quality of life – but we know that the demand for literacy far
outweighs the participation,” says Brent McIntosh, Site Manager of Learning
Services for YMCA Simcoe-Muskoka in Huntsville. He said about one-third of people in Muskoka are affected by low literacy in some
way.

“If support like the Muskoka Novel Marathon didn’t exist, we would likely see fewer
programs and longer waitlists, reduced one-on-one support, and less outreach and
visibility. Adults in our community could remain stuck,” said McIntosh. “This
partnership ensures that literacy services remain not just available, but strong,
responsive, and rooted in the community.”

Reading, writing, English-language skills, basic math and digital literacy are essential
life skills that help newcomers, job seekers, adults with barriers to education, and
others gain confidence, forge connections, and seize new opportunities in
employment or self-employment. These essential services change lives by helping to
unlock a person’s potential. Every dollar raised improves lives, strengthens families,
and builds healthier, more resilient communities.

Whether you’re starting your first novel or finally finishing one, the Muskoka Novel
Marathon offers a powerful mix of creativity, community, and purpose – but don’t
wait. Spots are limited, and the countdown is already on.

To register or learn more, visit MuskokaNovelMarathon.com or follow the Muskoka
Novel Marathon on Facebook.

The Muskoka Novel Marathon (MNM) returned to its new location at the Port Sydney Community Hall for the second year on July 10-13, 2025, with its final celebration held on September 20th at the Huntsville office of YMCA Employment & Literacy Services, where trophies were awarded, the Best Novel winner announced, and the final fundraising total was revealed.

During the Marathon itself, almost forty writers gathered in person and online, both to write as much of the next potential Pulitzer winning novel as they could in 72 hours, and also to raise funds in support of the Y’s literacy programs for the Muskoka area. Funds raised go directly to programs such as ESL classes, permanent residency and citizenship preparation, and other vital services offered at no cost for local residents, particularly newcomers to the area.

With an influx of new residents to the area, especially those for whom English is not their first language, the ESL programming offered by the Y is even more vital, yet the programming still receives a limited amount of federal funding. Fundraising events such as the MNM provide much needed funds to ensure maximum outreach. MNM is proud to have been a loyal fundraiser to this cause for fifteen years and counting.

Danielle Neilson, Event Coordinator for the YMCA, Simcoe/Muskoka, praised the participants for their “passion for writing”, and thanked them for their fundraising efforts. “Because of your support, more children, families, and individuals in our community will walk through the doors of the YMCA and feel safe, supported, and inspired. Thank you for sharing your gifts, your creativity, and your hearts with us.”

The Marathon is also an opportunity for writers from all locations and walks of life to spend a dedicated 72 hours to their art, which for many is usually secondary to their daily lives and work situation. Although there are professional authors who join each year, there are some who use this opportunity to try their hand at writing fiction for the very first time. All participants have the choice to compete for the coveted Best Novel award, which brings with it a chance for the winner’s work to be sent to At Bay Press, a Canadian publisher MNM has worked with for several years. Previous Best Novel winners have even gone on to have their works published globally. While there can be only one winner, all contest participants receive feedback from our team of judges, which historically has included authors, publishers, agents and other literary specialists.

Co-Convenors KM Wehrstein and Emeleigh Stroud were thrilled with this year’s event. “The MNM is a mammoth undertaking,” said Stroud, “both for the volunteers who work throughout the year to ensure its success, and for the writers who travel from all over the continent to Port Sydney to spend a crazy 72 hours writing. We had around a dozen writers who chose to stay on site the whole time this year, so the designated sleeping area was pleasantly filled with sleeping bags, camping beds and even couch cushions. The atmosphere was electric, as all these creative souls came together for one weekend with a shared purpose of creating art. It truly was an incredible experience.”

2025 also saw the first Spanish contingent of the MNM, with five Latina writers competing for a separate Spanish language Best Novel award. Pilar Miralles, convenor of the inaugural Spanish Division, worked incredibly diligently finding a publisher, judges, and sponsors for the event, including Canada Habla Espanol, a national organization promoting Latin voices throughout Canada. Although there was no winner for the Spanish Best Novel award this year, all five participants thoroughly enjoyed their experience, and all have voiced their desire to return next year, potentially with more Latin writers, which is incredibly exciting for the future of MNM. Wehrstein described Miralles’ work in single-handedly organizing the Spanish division as “fantastic” and looks forward to her continued directorship next year.

During the Wrap-up event on September 20th, over twenty MNM writers, volunteers, judges, and family members joined together to celebrate the 2025 event and discover this year’s winner and the final fundraising amount. Individuals were celebrated for their fundraising totals, including Tracey Skochil, a writer who joined the July event in person despite hailing from Arizona, USA, who single-handedly raised $5,120 through her personal fundraising campaign. Skochil was honoured to receive the Remington Award for most amount raised virtually through Zoom from her home in Arizona. Wehrstein added that Skochil “blew away our previous individual fundraising record … She did an incredible job!” In fact, her personal contribution exceeded MNM 2023’s final fundraising total of $4,500!

As for the Best Novel Award, an Honorable Mention went to Utterson resident Cindy Watson with her novel “1306”, while the 2025 recipient of this award was local author and journalist Kathleen May, who also joined the event virtually and could not hold back her tears as her name was announced. May will now be connected to At Bay Press where she will have the opportunity to complete and edit her work, entitled “The Last Earthers”, under their guidance for potential publication. Congratulations, Kathleen!

Other award winners include: Paula Boon (Star Volunteer Award for her long-time contributions); Jennifer Britton (B.I.C. (Bum In Chair Award), and Most Prolific Award, with a grand total of 47,537 words); Glennys Katiusca Alchoufi (B.I.C.); Melissa Gold (Techie Award); Bonnie Boyd and Monica Larade (who share the Rookie of the Year award); and Emeleigh Stroud (Techie Award and Spirit Award).

The final fundraising total for 2025 was $15,128.50.

The 25th Muskoka Novel Marathon will be held July 16-19, 2026 at the same venue. Registration will open March 10th, 2026.

Writers, judges, grateful YMCA officials and family members gathered at the Y office in Huntsville on Sept. 21 to celebrate and share happy memories of the first in-person Muskoka Novel Marathon since 2019—and to present the winners their trophies.

The Novel Marathon, which took place in mid-July at the Port Sydney Community Centre, is a creative hothouse/contest where writers pound out the best work they can for 72 intense hours, vying for the opportunity to send their manuscript directly to a waiting publisher. It is also a fundraiser for local literacy and related education through YMCA Simcoe-Muskoka’s learning programs.

“The YMCA Simcoe/Muskoka would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the writers and volunteers of the Muskoka Novel Marathon,” says Danielle Neilson, Event Co-ordinator for the Y. “I had an opportunity to visit, and the atmosphere was creative and infectious and exciting and unique. There aren’t many events that give you an exclusive opportunity to spend 72 hours being creative while also fundraising. This is a designated three days to nurture the creative soul.”

According to Team Leader of Learning Services Ashley McGee, the Y has been able to expand its offerings in part due to Marathon funds. As well as literacy classes in Huntsville, Parry Sound and south Muskoka, the Y has been able to provide a robust English as a Second Language with a new instructor, give refurbished laptops to computer skills graduates, offer training in employability skills, reach learners in remote locations, and much more.

The final fundraising total for Muskoka Novel Marathon 2024 was $13,220—the highest total since Covid broke out.

Here are the award winners:

Judged Awards:

Best Novel in the Adult category: Cara Shiedel (Utterson – in her rookie year!)

Best Novel in the Young Adult/Juvenile category: now three-time Best Novel winner Jennifer Turney (Huntsville)

Quantitative Awards:

Most Prolific Award: Catherine Neal (Mississauga) who won this award last year by writing 26,559 words, but outdid herself this year by writing 30,340.

Remington Award (for the writer who raises the most funds): Paula Boon (Huntsville), who raised $1,255 – though a very honourable mention goes to judge Tracey Skochil, who isn’t eligible for the writer-only award but nonetheless raised $2,350.

Peer-Voted Awards:

Rookie of the Year Award: James Whitehill (Barrie), age 11, who wrote alongside his mother Tracey Lapham-White—who herself won this same award at the 2006 Marathon, aged 13.

Spirit Award, for the writer who best demonstrates the spirit of the Marathon: Jade Wilson-Watson (Toronto)

Bum-in-Chair Award, for the writer who shows the best dedication by time spent at the keyboard: Kevin Craig (North York)

Techie Award, for the writer who most helps other writers with technical problems: KM Wehrstein (Huntville)

Award for Marathon Volunteer:

Star Volunteer Award (given to the Marathon by the Y in 2021 to annually recognize a volunteer for outstanding service): Cheryl Stamper (Huntsville) – the Marathon’s long-time and steadfast Co-Judge Liaison, Manuscripts.

Back in 2006, writer Tracey Lapham (they/them) became the youngest-ever person to participate in the Muskoka Novel Marathon, at the age of 13.

Little did Tracey know that 18 years in the future, their son James Whitehill would set the record even lower – age 11 – in a parent-child team-up at the 2024 Muskoka Novel Marathon from July 11 to 14.

Founded in 2002, the Marathon has continued unbroken ever since, even through the pandemic which saw four Marathons (2020-2023) conducted entirely online using Zoom. The Marathon is a combination three-day intensive writing retreat, contest and fundraiser for YMCA literacy education in Muskoka. It has raised more than $240,000 in its history, and more than one writer has gone on to publish one or more works started as Marathon projects, one (Amy Stuart) penning an international bestseller.

This year, 22 writers participated in person at the Port Sydney Community Hall in Port Sydney and another nine on Zoom. They have raised $12,508 so far. The final total along with Best Novel winners will be announced on Sept. 21.

James – or Jamie, to his Marathon friends – was happy to be there. “It was great,” he says. “The community sense is great. It feels really at home and everyone’s so kind. It’s really nice to get a chance to write whatever I want, to talk to people, get feedback.” He wrote 20 pages and entered the contest, vying against some adult professional writers. If he wins, his manuscript will be shown to a publisher as part of the prize.

At the Marathon, Tracey and Jamie sat side by side to write and, he says, “We were writing interconnected stories. We’re planning to write a book together.” Parent and child have similar taste in literature, he explains. “We like to read together, so why not write together?”

Says proud parent Tracey, “With James being here, it feels so real, because of when I was 13. It’s full circle. I see myself in him, but he’s his own person too. It’s cool, the ways he’s the same as me and it’s cool how we’re different. He’s come out his shell a lot, just in the past three days.”

What would Tracey have thought if they had known in 2006 what would transpire in 2024?

“I definitely never thought I’d be seeing the next generation at the Muskoka Novel Marathon. It would have never occurred to me that this cool event would become part of a legacy!”

Both have definite plans to come back next year.

After five years and four entirely online Muskoka Novel Marathons, the locally famed literary hothouse and literacy fundraiser will be a physical gathering once again in 2024.

A maximum of 30 writers will occupy the Port Sydney Community Hall for 72 hours of unfettered creativity from July 11 to 14, vying for the Best Novel Award, which includes a viewing of the manuscript by a Canadian publishing house, as well as the Remington Award for the writer who raises the most money for adult literacy in Muskoka.

“We didn’t miss a single Marathon because of COVID,” says convenor KM Wehrstein, a full-time writer best known in Muskoka for the “Cottage Country Cuisine” culinary feature in Unique Muskoka magazine. “We’re just lucky that we have an event that translates well onto Zoom. The online Marathons were all on the usual weekend in mid-July. But everyone’s been wanting badly to get back in person, and now we’re very excited to be doing it.”

Wehrstein notes that the 2024 Marathon is actually a hybrid event, with online participation still welcome at the discount price set in 2020. “We didn’t want to leave out the new online friends we made from 2020 to 2023, who are as far away as Hawaii.”

Founded in 2002 by five Muskoka writers, the Marathon has raised an estimated $240,000 in total for adult literacy education. Its current beneficiary is YMCA Simcoe-Muskoka’s Huntsville-based literacy program, which is now also active in Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Parry Sound as well as Huntsville. Over the years, Marathon funds have been used for sustaining literacy, numeracy and computer skills classes, extending hours, expanding staff, and upgrading IT equipment necessary for the program.

In recent years they have been allocated for the Y’s well-attended English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, empowering Syrian, Ukrainian and new Canadians from other nations to enter into and thus strengthen the local economy.

“Our ESL programs continue to be accessed at high volume across all three YMCA Learning Services locations,” says Ashley McGee, team leader of Learning Services at the Huntsville Y office. “Fundraisers like the Muskoka Novel Marathon allow us to continue a very robust ESL Program while additionally responding to the growing needs beyond the classes themselves.”

The YMCA is now able to offer language assessments and help prepare ESL students for their final exams.

The usually cheery face of Nancy West, Team Leader for YMCA Simcoe-Muskoka’s Literacy program, grows sombre as she speaks at the Muskoka Novel Marathon’s final wrap-up gathering of 2022 at the Y office in Huntsville.

“There are so many foreign workers in this area, we are unable to serve everyone,” she says, adding that they’re from many countries including Pakistan, Chile, Mexico, the Philippines – and, of course, Ukraine. “Almost all of them want to get their permanent residency, want to become part of this great country. But they have to get a certain English level. They want to get drivers’ licenses here, but they have to pass the G1 written test. We are seeing people with zero English.”

There is no government or school-board funded English as a Second Language program in Muskoka – only the YMCA’s free classes, which are funded by the Muskoka Novel Marathon. “Thank you for making this a better place to live for these people who are working, supporting employers who’d have to close if it weren’t for them,” West tells the writers.

Taya McLellan, the Y’s Coordinator of Events and Digital Campaigns, adds: “Increased literacy skills are strongly linked to economic growth, which is why we offer classes like computer skills, academic upgrading, ESL, GED prep, cash handling, and so much more. Funds generated through the Marathon greatly increase our ability to offer these life-changing programs.”

The final fundraising total for 2022 is $8,570.

This year’s award winners were lauded at the wrap-up:

Judged Awards:

Best Novel in the Adult category: Benjamin Glatt (for the second year in a row) (Etobicoke)

Honourable mention: Donna Curtin (Cargill, Ontario)

Best Novel in the Young Adult/Juvenile category: Sharon Frayne (Niagara-on-the-Lake)

Note: Best Novel winners are awarded not only a Muskoka chair, but a chance to have their winning manuscripts shown to a publisher or literary agent. This year it’s At Bay Press in Winnipeg.

Quantitative Awards:

Most Prolific Award: Lenore Butcher (Woodstock, Ontario) who wrote 278 pages and 53,935 words

Remington Award (for the writer who raises most funds): Donna Curtin, who raised $1,270 from 27 donors

Peer-Voted Awards:

Spirit Award: KM Wehrstein (Huntsville) & Donna Curtin (tied vote)

Bum-in-Chair Award: Lenore Butcher

Techie Award: Catherine Neal (Mississauga)

Rookie of the Year Award: Jane Burt (Titusville, Pennsylvania)

Award for Outstanding Marathon Volunteer:

Star Volunteer Award: Marlene Vettorel (Bracebridge – our long-time Treasurer)

When Covid first hit Ontario in March 2020, the Muskoka Novel Marathon organizers decided to hold it on the same mid-July weekend they’d planned to – only all online, rather than at the Canada Summit Centre’s Active Living Centre as usual. Rather than setting up their workspaces in the elegant Huntsville building for the 72-hour event – a combination intensive writer’s retreat, literary contest and fundraiser for literacy education in Muskoka – the writers set up at home and joined together on Zoom.

As a result of a February survey of MNM writers who have held seats reserved in 2020 for three years, MNM will happen online for the third time next weekend. Convenor KM Wehrstein notes that MNM’s two “Quarantine Editions” in 2020 and 2021 have produced a whole new set of MNM-hooked writers, from places as far away as Hawaii. “The next in-person Marathon, next year’s, is going to have to have an online aspect,” Wehrstein notes. “We’re planning for it.”

Since its inception in 2002, the MNM has raised well over $200,000 for free training in literacy, numeracy, computer skills and English as a Second Language for needful adults in Muskoka. With close to half of Canadians having some difficulty reading and a sixth unable to read even simple writing, such as road signs, it’s a hidden but severe problem, and one close to a writer’s heart.

But there are benefits for the writers themselves: the camaraderie of their own tribe, prizes donated by local businesses to those who raise the most funds, and the big plum: Best Novel contest winners get to skip the flushpile and have their manuscripts sent straight to publishing-house editors or literary agents. Many MNMer’s have gone on to publish projects started at the Marathon, including Amy Stuart, whose novel went on to become an international bestseller.

If you want to sponsor a writer, support the MNM’s fundraising generally or sign up to write – it’s not too late! – visit muskokanovelmarathon.com .

The Muskoka Novel Marathon (MNM) is celebrating 20 years of bringing writers together in support of literacy by launching a special series of workshops and lectures that kicks off tonight.

The local novel marathon has been gathering writers together for a weekend dedicated to their craft since 2002. Each year, participants set out to produce a manuscript, whether it be a novel, a screenplay or even a collection of short stories or poetry, while socializing with and supporting other writers. After the weekend is over, the manuscripts are considered for MNM awards and the best manuscript winners get the chance to have their work reviewed by a publisher or an agent. Since its inception, the event has raised over $225,000 for literacy training programs in the region.

“The novel marathon is 72 hours of just writing,” said KM Wehrstein, convenor for the 2021 event. “Maybe you sleep, you usually eat and you write, and that’s it.”

Wehrstein’s first encounter with the MNM happened in 2005. She was walking by an old bank building in downtown Huntsville and noticed a sandwich board that said a novel marathon was happening inside. Figuring she would know at least one of the writers, she decided to check it out.

“I walked into the bank building and it was full of writers all pounding away,” Wehrstein said. “There were writers in the teller’s booth and writers in the offices and writers in the vault. The energy in the room of all that creativity pouring out was just amazing.”

Wehrstein immediately felt the need to be involved, so she joined the 2006 event and hasn’t missed one since. A few years later, she took up the task of running the MNM alongside fellow volunteer Paula Boon. Wehrstein has continued to volunteer for the event since then, so when the pandemic hit, she and the rest of the committee decided to move the marathon online.

Muskoka Novel Marathon writers and volunteers at the Active Living Centre in 2017.
The usual in-person event is held at the Active Living Centre and can only accommodate 40 writers, but because of the online format, the committee was able to offer unlimited seats last year and 66 writers signed up. This year’s marathon will also offer an unlimited number of spaces at a cost of just $25 compared to the usual $100 fee, giving writers the chance to try out a novel marathon at home for a reduced rate.

“Registration is open. It’s going to stay open right until the last minute because we can write with as many people as we want,” Wehrstein said. “Next year, if we go back to in-person, it’ll be capped at 40, so this might be a good chance for somebody who wants to jump in.”

The event itself isn’t until July 16 to 19, but in the meantime, the MNM committee will be hosting a series of workshops and lectures covering topics like writing what you know, professional-quality world building and how to go from MNM to international bestseller.

Registered writers can get into all the events for free while unregistered attendees can pay a small fee, which will benefit the YMCA literacy programs in Muskoka alongside any money raised by the writers. The fundraising aspect of the marathon was put on hold last year due to the pandemic, but the writers still managed to raise just over $5,000. This year, they’re renewing their fundraising efforts in support of local literacy.

“We know it makes a difference in people’s lives,” Wehrstein said. “Writers in particular know the importance of reading, the importance of the written word. How powerful it is, and how necessary it is.”

Wehrstein experienced the impact literacy can have in a profound way at her first MNM. A 96-year-old man who had just learned to read through the local literacy program, known then as the Muskoka Literacy Council, visited the marathon and shared his story. One of the MNM’s slogans is “writers helping readers,” so the literacy programs are a perfect fit as the event’s beneficiary, Wehrstein said.

Committee member Jennifer Turney joined the MNM on a whim, participating as a writer for the first time in 2015, but it was the support for local literacy programs that led her to volunteer.

“Once I saw the passion that people had for raising money for literacy and how important it actually is to our community, I knew it was something I really wanted to be a part of,” Jennifer said. “So I volunteered in both the sponsorship coordinator role and as the media liaison.”

Jennifer is looking forward to attending the virtual event with her daughter Haley, who is returning for her third marathon after winning Rookie of the Year during her first go at the event in 2019.
While Jennifer wishes the writers could be back in-person this year, she’s looking forward to the shared inspiration of the marathon and she’s excited to see what Haley and the rest of the writers come up with.

“To see that it’s grown from a couple people getting together to an event where there can be a real race to get a seat really speaks to how much people love it,” Jennifer said. “It’s something I’m really proud to be a part of.”

A message from the organizers of the Muskoka Novel Marathon:

In a year that has seen the majority of events cancelled due to a global pandemic, the committee of Muskoka Novel Marathon has been actively working to ensure their event doesn’t have to follow suit.

Led by co-convenors KM Wehrstein and Colum McKnight, the literary marathon has adapted to an online platform for its 19th year while attempting to maintain as many of its traditional aspects as possible, including fundraising for Muskoka literacy programs provided by the Huntsville YMCA office.

“Nothing stops the Muskoka Novel Marathon,” says Wehrstein. “Not even COVID-19. We’re just adapting how we do it a bit.”

The online delivery has created an opportunity for more writers to register as the event is not limited by venue capacity. Registration in previous years often brought a race for seating, leaving some writers disappointed – this year the sky is the limit for space.

“What’s cool is that we’re seeing a lot of writers who participated five or 10 or 15 years ago signing up, and also people from far away taking advantage of the savings on travel,” says Wehrstein.

During the 72-hour event, each writer will be attempting to complete a manuscript – be it a novel, a screenplay, a collection of short stories or whatever their discipline may be – for a chance to have it reviewed by a publisher or an agent. There will also be social programming, meal-time gatherings and fun activities such as a selfie scavenger hunt and an inspirational walk lead by MNM alumna Sue Kenney – all online and respecting social-distancing guidelines.

As in previous years, writers will also fundraise for the Y’s adult literacy programs. Since starting its fundraising efforts years ago, the Muskoka Novel Marathon has raised more than $220,000 to help fund classes for reading, writing, numeracy, computer literacy and English as a Second Language, ensuring they can be offered to people in the community free of charge.

The Muskoka Novel Marathon: Quarantine Edition is happening July 17 to 20. Registration is open on the Muskoka Novel Marathon website! If you’ve ever wondered what the marathon is all about, this is the year to check it out – registration is free! MNM2020:QE is a fantastic opportunity to network with other writers who share a passion for literacy.
